north wexford beach

#1 Post by eric »

People:myself and shammoo

Duration:4-9pm

Tide: not too sure, it was there anyway

Weather: light northerly

Bait: wraps,sandeel,peeler,rag and mack

Rigs: flappers, 3 hook loops and single hook sliders

Results: 1 tub gurnard, 4 dabs, 5 whiting, 1 shoolie and 1 dog

Report: with a load of left over bait from katts i decided to use it up on sunday afternoon on a beach thats been good fun in the past for scratching out a few fish, with a decent fish or two always popping up. got there around four, with a lovely little roll coming in over the bar, it screamed flounders and schoolies. baited up one of my scratching rigs with rag and frozen lug tipped with mack, and tossed it 20 yards or so to the inside of the bar, in no time at all the tip was signaling the tell tell signs of a fish, sure enough i reeled in a few minutes later to see a little tub gurnard come through the waves, blank saved, out went another flapper to the same spot, which gave me time to set up my other rod, decided to go for a hound so i casted a crab bait as far as i could. a few casts passed and with not a touch on either rod i decided to for a change of tactics, instead of crab i baited up a three hook loop with sandeel on distance rod and went for dogs. on the scratching rod i decided to try the outside of the bar and twitch it in every few minutes, sure enough my next cast rewarded me with a dab, whiting double, next cast again got me a whiting and so on, eventually found what must have been a small shoal of schoolies as on the retrieve i hooked into one and on the next cast hooked another only to see it land on the beach, free itself and swim away in the back wash and another wave rolled in, not too worry. the sandeel being refreshed every 15 minutes for an hour couldn't tempt a dog so i decided to cast a big crab bait in the surf to tempt a bass or two for the last couple of hours, still nothing showed  meanwhile frozen wraps wrapped in mack skin were getting a fish almost every cast towards the end, mostly mini whiting but with a few counters thrown in, the dabs where of good quality too with all of them over 25cm, poor shammoo not doing much different at all couldn't hook a bite, with hooks coming back bare on most casts, finally got a dog as darkness kicked in, all in i was a little disappointed no flounder showed and neither of us hooked into a decent fish, at least theres next time

With last nights result's I'd say it hardly warrants keeping the mark a secret

But if you mention the 5/6lb smoothie and couple of Bass I got there last weekend, then yep.....definately one to keep to ourself's

Well done eric on your fish, boy did your camera fone make that 5lb Bass look small
