Mullranny Newport Co Mayo 28.8.2008

#1 Post by kieran »

People: Myself and the boys, Eoin 8 and Cathal 5

Duration: until bedtime!

Tide: heading out, low surf

Weather: drizzle threatening all the time, very low cloud, light wind

Bait: very old sandeel and razorfish, prawn

Rigs: two hook flapper, pulley rig

Results: several hundred kilos of weed

Report: Being the lads birthday I simply had to bring him fishing or be denounced as the worst dad in history so we went down to the beach and I know to expect nothing. Weed in mounds on the foreshore, weed in horrible slews in the sea, even the rockpools were covered in the sh*32 so it came as no surprise that we caught feck all except good manure. Boys were very taken with the shrimps in the rockpools to which the younger fed all my only decent bait, a packet of sandeels. Incredibly no fish or crabs, got to worry about that spot. Very heavy drain runs in above it, pure bog water and lots of it, probably sent any marine species scarpering. Eoin is mad about this and dying to go out again. Cathal can cast a ten foot spinning rod which amazed me, its at least three times bigger than him! Nice evening out.

Mythical Mayo bass remains just that...

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
