Gurteen Co. Galway 28.08.08

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: mga & myself

Duration: 15:15 - 19:15

Tide: Full then falling

Weather:dd Cracking day in Connemara little wind

Bait: Mackerel, sandeel, squid & lug
dd
Rigs: Various

Results: mga 1 Thornback Ray 49cm, myself 7 Thornback Ray to 46cm 1 mackerel

Report: Having not fished with Martin in a little while arangements were made to meet at the ranch and head out to fish Gurteen over the dropping tide arrived at the mark to be greeted with a glorious day blue skies crystal clear water gentle breeze we both thought "looks perfect for ray". We both wet up two rods one in close and one out a bit further. Mga had a good bite after about 5mins and struck into a a nice looking fish good bend in the Zzipey "feels like a ray" he said and sure enough in came a fine thornback ray 49cm quick photo (which martin will upload later) and the fish was returned to fight another day it was great watching him through the clear water make a dive for the bottom and rest for a few mins before gracefully gliding back out to the depths. Shortly after i got a tap then another engaged the reel and struck into what felt like a good fish, turned out to be a brace of thornies happy days. This could be some session we both said after our first casts both produced ray. With rods re-baited and back in the water we waited in anticipation. I got hit again after about 10mins on the rod in close and pulled in another ray  Re-baited and cast out things went ouiet for about 40mins then i got hit and in came another ray 8) mga was having no luck :( which was odd as we were fishing very close together. Then about 20mins later the rachet fired on my distance rod took a nice bit of line as the fish ran. Reeled in to find another thornie 46cm gave a great account of herself and was full of beans the fight felt like a much bigger fish as she took like on the way in too!! mga was still having no luck and tried varying baits and tactics to try and land another fish it just wasn't happening for him although he did take the biggest ray of the day :D 15mins after the last ray and i was in again as another thornie was landed. Things went very quiet then for an hour and a half we had one last cast which produced a second double for me a thornie and a mackerel 8) Nothing for mga unfortunately :( Better luck on Sunday Martin

Yeah, I know. After getting the first good take on a 3-hook flapper at about 60yds, I expected great things  . There was no keeping up with Conor - he was on fire today and couldn't do anything wrong.

If I was Stevecrow74, I'd probably say something like "well at least, I got the 1st fish and the biggest", but I wouldn't dream of saying such a thing . Fair play Conor, great result. Well done fella  .

Nice to see the ray playing ball on one of the best days we've had, weather-wise, over the last couple of months 8) 8) 8)

Looking forward to the weekend...

Wexford, here we come
