East Cork flounder - 19th August 2008

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me

Duration: 5.30 - 9.00 pm

Tide: HW at 8.00 pm

Weather: Sunny, partly cloudy, warm, light westerly wind, dry

Bait: Rag, razor

Rigs: 2 hook flappers (Size 2/0 and 3/0), 3 hook flapper (Size 1)

Results: 7 flounder (3 greater than 40 cm)

Report: As it was a nice sunny afternoon I decided that such days are few and far between this "summer" so I should make the most of it and go fishing - first dug some rag worms, came back home and untangled some rigs then headed out to an East Cork beach.

When I got there I found that weed was initally a bit of a problem - thought I had bites only to reel in a large kelp stem

I set up three rods baited with rag and some tipped with razor. I cast one in close the other two at moderate distance.

The rod in close was the first to get a bite - a good size flounder at 40 cm and just over 1.5 lb.

It was quite for a while after that - then I got a small 20 cm flounder.

About an hour before high tide it got more frantic - I had a bite on one of the moderate distance rods - and hauled in another good flounder, 41 cm and 1.75 lb. Just as I was about to photograph it the rod in close had a strong knock - I retrieved another large flounder, again about 41 cm but heavier at just over 2 lb.

A little later I got another small flounder of 20 cm or so on one of the moderate distance rods. Shortly after that there was a knock on the rod in close - this time a flounder double, although both very small, again in the 20-25 cm range.

It went quite after that - as the tide began to drop weed again became a problem so I packed up at about 9.00 pm.

I was happy with the result, I have only once before got a 40 cm + flounder on the that beach so to get three in the one session was good.

Thanks guys,
They were three decent size flounder alright.

I went back to the same beach tonight, although tried the opposite end this time - got five smallish flounder and an undersize bass.

I will post a report on it tomorrow - too knackered to do it now
