millisle mullet

2day i hit millisle early after feeding it the nite b4. i took both my usal mullet rods my fly rod and my feeder rod. i saw the mullet right away. i used 2 different baits- bread and maggot. on the fly rod i used a size 14 barbed hook with a piece of polystyrene and 2-3 white maggots. this was the only bait i got a bite on white i had on for about 3 seconds but he soon got off. i dont know whether im usin the right hook size. would ny1 know wat the best hook size is fore mullet.

Are the mullet in the "lagoon"?

yea they are infact i just missed one this morn. just shook the hook out as i brought it to the net i estimated it to be 2.5-3Ibs.

sounds to me like you had no chance of getting a good hook hold on a 14 hook with polystyrene and maggots.. i could be wrong BUT,

either use a bigger hook or put less gear on the 14

i would aggree with mann i think a slightly hook,maybe a size 10,would give you a better chance of a hook-up.if im using bread on the float rod i would only use a size 6 fine wire hook.
i have had some success fly fishing for mullet(but not much) but hook size would depend on what size of free bread the mullet are taking from the surface,then i`d pick out a bread fly to suit that size,with hooks in sizes 10,8 or 6.i`ve had one mullet using partridge fake bread,it gets a lot of interest from them but cos its hard if they missed it first time they dont seem to come back for another go,so make sure the hook is very sharp and there is plenty of hook point showing.
i`ve also had interest in the white foam i got from my sons burst whoopie cushion :lol: but it will sink with a big heavy hook so thats where the fine wire size 6 come in handy.it will sink eventually but stays floating long enough.i`ve had luck with a tiny piece of foam on a size 10 hook when the mullet are taking bread as it slowly sinks.i would pluck bits of foam off until it also slowly sinks.
could be worth trying a single maggot or a maggot immitation on the fly rod.throw in a few maggots every now and again just to keep them interested then cast ontop of the shoal and pray one of them takes the hook as it sinks slowly to the bottom.


im def going to get down there for a run sometime soon.
