West clare Mullett

Picked up two (both just under 3lbs) at low tide yesterday 17th.

It was raining hard and I could not see the fish so the first one caught me by supprise. I meant to bring my fly rod down but forgot it and so I fished with my 5 year old son's little thing we use to catch small polock and coalies around piers. It is a 4' - 5'ish Zebco cool thinf with a casting weight of about 1/2 oz so the craic was mighty.

I was using semi-circle (size 6 ) hooks so not seeing the fish was not much of a problem as they hooked themselves almost. I had a big lump of mackeral attached to the line (using a size 8/0) so there was no point striking everytime I felt a tug as the mullet were grazing on the attached (ground bait).

Has anyone tried something like the carp "method" for mullet fishing as a lot of the tactics seem similar to Coarse fishing (from what I have seen on TV that is)?

Also nabbed a little Rock cook Wrasse.

I think Henry Gilbey calls that the "Fillet of Death" method!

I was copying that method alright but the fillet didn't stay untill I used the meat hook attached to the line. The ground bait was being taken away by the feeding fish if it wasn't attached to the line, though the first fish had no attractor fillet attached but it was plopped into the discard from that mornings mackerel and so there was plenty of stuff around.

Next time I am thinking of burying a baited size 6 into the fillet and as the mullet are grazing on the large piece of fish one will have to get hooked. Has anyone tried anything like this before? The time before last I landed a monster mullet that hooked himself on the size 8 conger/tope hook used to attach the fillet to the line!!!

Well done Marno,

I too used a Childs rod when me and 2 of my friends went fishing for the mullet 2 year ago.. great fight but it took forever to land the fish.. It was near dead by the time I landed it,

Lucky for me my friend wanted it to eat later so it didn’t go to waste, funny thing about it was my mates Dulittle & Spit had the best of gear and never even got a bite, :lol:

You where unlucky to forget the fly rod because it’s a fight you wont forget in a hurry… having said that the rod you used wouldn’t be far away from the action from the fly rod,
