Greystones 10/08/08 - Topetastic!

#1 Post by RobertMcClean »

Vessel: Thresher

Crew: Myself and Kev (aka MAC)

Duration: 8am to 3pm

Tide: Most of the ebb and 2 hours of the flood.

Weather: S/W to West force 4-5

Bait: Macko/Squid

Rigs: Usual Suspects

Results: LSD, Whiting, Codling, Pollock, Tope, Mackerel, Gurnards.

Report: Myself and Kev took our chances this morning knowing all too well that the forecast was poor and the prospects of a long day out were slim. To be fair the best part of the day was spent looking for shelter and chatting about the potential trips that could be had for the rest of the year if the weather settled down, but alas the day dreaming would be cut short by yet another squall. Despite the strong winds the clouds occasionally lifted and we got a sniff of summer and a few nice species soon followed to make the trip worthwhile.

We started out with one thing on our minds and that was to get some decent rod bending action. So obviously Tope was top of our list. Anchoring at our usual spots was not an option as it was too lumpy and we were not out for an endurance test but just a simple days fishing. So instead we went on the drift for them, which, I have to say I prefer when Tope fishing, you cover more ground and the fish tend to hit the bait very hard. Drop runs are very very rare. Before too long Mac showed me how it was done by nailing an energetic summer Tope. It was definitely the bait presentation that done it, all those trips to Africa finally paid off Kev.  After another few fish we decided that we had done well to get out and get some decent fishing in so we headed back for a well deserved Pint and of course more day dreaming of the next trip out!

Mac strikes into something decent..
