Shannon Estuary, usual mark 4/8/08

#1 Post by gearoid mc s. »

People:me fein

Duration:1:30-4:30

Tide:lw @ 14.49....0.3

Weather:warm cloudy and a slight westerly

Bait:macko ans squid

Rigs:pulleys(all i had left :? ),pennell clipped 2/0, 3/0 big mouths

Results:2 thornies to 4.5lbs
??lb huss
10lb conger

Report:fantastic tides all weekend but having to go to a 21st sat nite and as a result spending sunday in bed..I managed only to get out today.....I arrived and set up in good time for once and after a few fruitless casts and missed bites out came the calamari..instant result...a nice 3lb ray on the G1. released the fish and re-cast then as i sat down on my box the highlander had a big slack liner which slowly tightened up and began nodding away to tune tune of a typical ray bite..i quickly re-baited and took the rod...as the fish came in i thought i had a decent ray on because while it did make a few runs and was as heavy as a rock it didnt seem to have the power of a conger..the last few yards it got snagged aboout 3 times and when it finally surfaced i nearly dropped..a massive ball of angry huss..This was by far the biggest i had ever seen..I didnt want to cause it too much stress by hanging it off a scales but it was a foot longer than my arm(im 6'1" tall) and six inches across the back of the neck..and man was it heavy..fortunately it was lip hooked so it popped out quite easily....after that i had just put the rod back out and the G1 went again..a spirited fight produced another thornie this time around the 4.5lb mark. Again the highlander went with this time a thumping bite...wound a very heavy weight for about 50 yards but the fish spat the hook (typical huss behaviour) and i was not impressed. Next cast the highlander(the big fish seem attracted to this rod) had another bite again got about 50 yards only for things to go light again..this time the snood had been bitten off :x :x i was like an anti-christ. Now at this stage the tide was ripping hard so i had one last cast and after 5 minutes another fish was banging on it..I gave a hefty strike to make sure the hook set and this time the fish went mental..I knew it was a conger from the off and a nice double figure fish rounded off the day nicely..but there was a nice suprise waiting for me yet because as i went to unhook him..lo and behold there was the hook i had lost on the previous cast after been bitten off lodged in his lip..the hungry fecker had been hooked, hauled for 50 yards yet it still found and took the bait on the very next cast....they really are voracious feeders. Still noy ray on the highlander its jinxed but not complaining...what a day the place was walking with fish.. hopefuly one of ye out there might put a weight on that huss for me aswel! Who needs bass..well ok..maybe for livebait

Nice to get a decent huss. Very easy to underestimate Huss from photos as so much of there weight is in there girth. My avatar was a huss not far off 12lbs from the same mark.

Na well done Gearoid great fishing for a 3 hours session.. That is one fat mother of a Huss.. they must feed well down your area,
