28/07/08 My first shore caught Thornie

#1 Post by marshpike »

People: Moi and fishermannum1

Duration: 9pm - 12.30

Species: 3 Thornback Rays

Weight: Don't care.......

Weather: Sublime, even the wave you see in the photie was from a passing boat.

Method: Pulley rig

Bait: Sand eel

Comments: As most of you know I've been craving for one of these curious creatures all year, I've had to wait a long time till an opportunity came up so I could make the journey up north. I've had a few good fish this year including a 46lb Tope a few weeks ago which is a PB Irish fish but for some reason my first Thornie toped the lot  .

Unfortunately I run out of sand eels and my mackies were a day old so I bagged about a dozen flounder during the morning session, still buzzing though and looking forward to my next trip.

Big thanks to fishermannum1 for the hospitallity, hopefully I can return the favour in the near future ;)

nice one on the thornie.its a pity we have to travel so far to get rays from the shore,we should be catching them in belfast lough or strangford but the chances of catching them these days has been well and truly wrecked

I know what you mean Davy, Carlingford used to be heaving for them.

Good new is that they were loads picked up (mistakenly) by the mussel dredgers this year around March (all returned), they dredge only 100 yds from the shore at slack water so I'll have to start putting in a bit of work the problem is that it would more than likely take up all my spare time trying to locate the small numbers that are still there.
