WHITE WATER II, Galway Bay Sharking, 26/07/08

#1 Post by tomi »

People:myself and five others

Duration:9 to 6

Tide: HW 11.34 (Galway)

Weather: bright and worm, south-easterly winds

Bait: mackerel, pirks

Rigs: traces, hokkai, etc...

Results: 3 Blue Sharks, a tonne of big pollock, whiting, codling

Report:
We left the pier in Spiddle at 9.00 am, hedding towards Black Head for fresh mackerel. We rich the spot no time, (belive me guys she's fast boat) and caught box of mack in minutes. With good amount of fresh bait we move to shark grounds on the back of Aran Islands. Condition was perfect, so I have hope for good catch! On the way John start prepare the mince for rubby- dubby.
On the place skipper set the boat for drift, and tasty onion bag land in the water. Plan was set up three rods for sharks, and do a bit of ground fishing in the mine time...

Just after 5 mins. my baloon starts jumping on the surface, and line starts escape from the reel. I was suprised that first bite was so fast. I don't knew when I grab the rod, ready for strike, but I hold it for second run, and after that I hit the fish.
Big fight starts on! My First ever Blue Shark, shaking his head on my rod!
Guys that's some feeling! Fish was swim away, and I could just hold the rod and keep the line tight. After fieve runs, I was ready to reel in. Job wasn't easy and after 5 minutes I had enough, but there was no way, to pass the rod to someone else. I just ask one of the guys for butt pad, and don't stop play with fish. After about 15 mniutes big white-blue shadow appears below the surface. It took another 5 mins of runs and dives, to have Shark on the side of the boat. John and Tom, tight two line loops on the fish- one on the head and another on the tail, and careful lift him to the boat. I was happy, but tired. My Arms nearly fell off the body.
After short foto session "the beast" was return to the water in perfect condition. I was hold the fish by the tail till she wants swim away...

That was the biggest fish of the day!
weight: 120 lbs
length: 8 foot

In total we landed 3 blue sharks. Second fish was 85 lbs, and 6.5 foot.
Third one was little bigger- 100 lbs and 7 foot in length.

Ground fishing was also excellent. Nearly every drop give us a fish. Big pollock's mainly, with some nice whitig, coal fish and one codling.

That was absolutely magnificent day on the water  , and good worm-up before august SAI SAC trip

Thanks guys...

Just receive phone call from skipper. John has done the maths, and weight of shark was 140 lbs
It is not a matter of upper or lower class, but of being up a while and down a while...
