Strangford Lough mullet,24-7-08

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:me

Duration:2hrs

Tide:high

Weather:sunny

Bait:bread

Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:Tried one of my usual marks with Marty but the wind was too strong which made the fishing very difficult so we headed to a sheltered mark.
When we arrived there was a few fish moving but they didn`t hang around and just kept swimming up stream.Marty had to head on but i decided to wait until the tide started to drop again to see if they would hang around at the usual corner.
I moved upstream first to see if there was much happening and spotted a small group of fish splashing around so i threw in some freebies which they happily took so i had a quick go with floating bread but i missed 5 fish before the tide dropped and they moved with it :( .I headed downstream to meet them at the usual corner.
Groups of mullet 40-50 strong came downtide and hung around for 15 mins until the next big group took their place.I was using sunken bread and missed a few bites which was starting to bug me,then while i was casting most of my bait went flying off leaving just enough bread to cover the hook.I left it in the water hoping there was enough bread to get a mullets attention,it did and i hooked into a nice fish but unfortunately after a good scrap it came off as i brought it to the net
I put the smallest piece of bread i could get to stay on the hook and cast out again and 30 seconds later i had hooked another nice fish. This one didn`t get off and after a very good fight it was in the net and took the scales to 3.9lb :)
After a few more missed bites i hooked into another, this one didn`t fight as hard but was still good fun.It must have been the other mullets twin cos it also took the scales to 3.9lb :D .
I missed two more bites before the tide was too low and all the fish had moved away.I counted about 200-300 mullet pass me in the 1.5hrs i was there.
I know where i`ll be tomorrow night :) and i`ll have my camera ready for some photos

nice fishing davy , i thought you might have put up a report from wednesdays mullet expedition . i 'll see if i can get time to do one later
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

marhspike i cant count,i was using one of those clicker things that bouncers use to count how many are going in to the club

colin you`ll need to catch more than 1 mullet before you can call them yours

ronald i was waiting for you to put up a report about wedensday seeing as you caught the most  i might head down there tomorrow morning see if i can get one of the bigger fish that were around, also the wind is to drop so that should help the fishing.

spot on tanglerat, they`re not stolen if you release them, just like when you "borrow" a dvd from HMV then take it back the next day when you`ve watched it

Davy I love reading your reports, I am new to the board and indeed a "beginner" with the rod, however would love to have a pop at the mullet. I think that your mark is right on my door step which is nice to know there is a good fishing close at hand. I know those mullet can be tough with past experience so hat off to ya mate.

cheers

Very surprised to hear that you are still fishing with the poacher. Understand Marty had the best mullet this week, strange it did not appear on the posts, but then he is a modest individual, unlike some.
