Strangford Lough mullet,22-7-08

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:myself and marty

Duration:2.5hrs

Tide:filling

Weather:cloudy,warm

Bait:bread

Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:Headed over to Strangford for a bash at the mullet and to take advantage of the drop in wind, which has been blowing too strong for this mark lately.
It didn`t take long to get the mullet feeding and within 15mins i had landed the first fish.It was only a small mullet of 8oz but it was nice to see fish feeding so well. There was loads of fish around but alot of them were small and not long after the first fish i hooked another of 1.5lb.
We both missed alot of bites then it was marty`s turn to hook into a fish, this one was a much better fish and put up a good scrap.I stood by with the net waiting for it to come close enough for me to scoop up,which i did(only just  ) The scales went to 4.2lb,a very nice fish which was photographed and slipped back.
We moved along the coast to high tide mark and there was a few fish moving around.Marty stayed in close to the shore to target a group of mullet feeding in close.I waded out 200 hundred yards to some fish i spotted hanging around one spot.I saw a few mullet taking free offerings from the surface and moved as close as i could without spooking them.First cast at them and i missed a bite then they moved away,so i had to find more feeding targets.
While i was wading around Marty had a group of mullet feeding infront of him and he lost three fish before they moved away.I spotted a few smaller mullet taking bread and moved closer, this time i didn`t miss the bite and landed my biggest fish of the day at 2lb.That was the end of the session and the mullet had moved well out of reach with the tide.
Very enjoyable session and i look forward to tomorrow.I`ll maybe try the fly rod while they are feeding well. :)
