Strangford Lough mullet,26th 27th june

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:me,colin c

Duration:2hrs each day

Tide:high

Weather:cloudy,light rain,breezy

Bait:bread

Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:Been trying to get a mullet on the fly rod for 3 weeks, missed loads but cant seem to get a hook into them so i headed out with float rod to try to break my blank spell :(
Headed out after work on thursday armed with my float rod and colin brought his fly rod.Unfortunately the mullet wouldn`t take any bread from the surface so the fly rod was no use and colin had to leave just as the fishing got good.I changed tactics and started using sunken bread and within minutes i missed a bite.
It wasn`t long before i hooked my first fish which was quickly landed,it was a small fish of 2lb.Not long after that i hooked and lost a bigger fish :( But thankfully the mullet were still feeding and after more missed bites i was in to another fish. This one didn`t come to the net so easily and it was 5+mins before i got it in the net,the scales went to a healthy 3.9lb.
A few more missed bites then the mullet moved out with the tide.A very enjoyable session :D

Next night we both headed to the same spot with just float rods. After a short wait the mullet were back in the same spot feeding again and i missed the first bite.I missed another few before i got my first hook up.This fish fought very well and was best part of ten minutes before it was in the net.The scales went to 4.35lb 8) :D
Colin missed a few bites before they moved out with the tide.We tried to follow them but couldn`t find a good spot t fish from so we packed up.
If only i could catch them as easily on the fly rod :(

cheers steve, getting them on bait doesn`t seem to be a problem, its the fly rod thats proving difficult :( i`ve missed 20+ on the artificial bread and i bought a new fly rod and reel which im dying to break in :)
i`ll be heading down again tonight and i`ll start with fly rod and see how it goes :)

Well done Davy, I'm tempted to have another crack at them, just the wife wasn't too happy me going out at every tide to feed fish with her bread...........

There a challenging fish but they're there to be caught if you put in a little effort.
