People: Me
Duration: 9.30 pm - 1.20 am
Tide: HW at 1.00 am
Weather: Light southwesterly breeze, foggy at first, then cleared, mild, dry
Bait: Lug, razor, sandeel, mackerel, squid
Rigs: 3/0 and 1/0 pennel pulley, size 1 three hook flapper
Results: 2 dogfish, 1 silver eel
Report: I decided to try an East Cork beach that I had not fished before, one that only produces at night. I dug some lug worms on the way and got set up at about 9.30 just after a fog bank rolled in.
There was only a weak surf but it was weed free - unlike a beach that I tried to fish earlier in the week which was unfishable due to the amount of weed. It did not look great for bass but was hopeful for a few flat fish.
I set up the 3/0 pennel rig with lug/razor just in case there were bass knocking about and the three hook flapper was baited wth lug tipped with mackerel or sandeel. All was quite until after dark as expected. Then there were nibbles on the bait but nothing hooked for quite a while until I got the first dogfish on the pennel.
There were a few missed bites after that on the three hook flapper, or the fish managed to break free before I could land it. Then I got a second dogfish on sandeel.
A bit later I got a silver eel on the flapper, caught on a hook baited with lugwrom and tipped with a slice of sandeel. It made a total mess of my rig - twisted into a ball   A new species for me - but just one of those little b*****ds will do for this year.
After that I decided to change tactics - switched the flapper for a 1/0 pennel baited with lug/razor and put a small mackerel head on the 3/0 pennel just in case there was a bass knocking about. But no joy - all I got was a crab munching on the mac head
There was a few bites on the 1/0 pennel - something was taking chunks out of the bait between the two hooks - probably dogfish.
Hopefully the weed will clear off my usual beach marks soon.
