#1 Post by DL.TURBOT »

Hello, Ive only been Sea Fishing around Inishowen for a few months and have been doing Ok, But reading Sea Angler this month I see its Cod season, Does this apply to West Coast Of Ireland, and is there anywhere around Inishowen or near by that may produce Cod?

Cod in Donegal

#4 Post by kieran »

Hi DL

Codling more than Cod can be expected from now on, especially in the larger estuaries down south like Youghal, Dungarvan, Kinsale etc. You get them in Clew Bay and once upon a time in Donegal Bay, not so sure about Inishowen but they get good fish in North Antrim so I reckon yes.

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Hens teeth I'm afraid.

But there a great oppertunity to get out and put some work in. There alot of ground in Inishowen thats never seen arod and especially at this time of year. I know a nice codling was caught on a boat off culdaff peir last week close to the shore too. so you never know. After a nice storm when the waters still coloured. :D

Yup. There's at least one nice codling somewhere West of Inishowen and a couple of miles North of Fanad.

I know, cos 3 weeks ago he dropped off my hook at the side of the boat..........

I'd say the rough ground at Malin or Dunaff would be the best bet, you'd be wasting your time on any of the clean beaches except maybe Kinnegoe but then again that place can be more miss than hit. Big mussel/lug/squid combos or peeler is what you'll need and If your prepared to endure a half dozen blankety blanks then there is no real reason you wouldnt lift one from those rough ground spots.
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.
Fresh Water (2) brown trout, sea trout

would have thought the rough ground in donegal would be the place to be for cod at this time of year. the east coast throws good numbers of mini codling, still looking for their parents
species for 2009 (42)
species for 2010 (27)
species for 2011 (12)
species for 2012 (8)
best advice for catching species is girls dont like fishing and its hard to catch fish when you sell all your gear'

Keep looking Eric but i reckon all the parents have ended up in a trawlers net :evil:thats why on the east coast we have so many mini codling/whiting

Donegal's Cod Population

#11 Post by joemeenan »

Oh yes, cod are present around Inishowen. October sees herring shoals moving up Lough Swilly, and cod in pursuit. They are usually well out of the range of the beachcaster, on the Inishowen side at least, don't know about the Tir Conaill side. Dunaff and Tullagh can be productive after a blow, monster casting is not necessary as a seventy yard lob, will put you among the fish.

Use fairly strong gear here, Abu 7000's and Penn 535's loaded with 35lb mainline straight through is usually sufficient, obviously a stout rod to match. I leave the modern rods at home and use an old Abu atlantic 464, perfect, if a little heavy by modern gear standards.

For bait, lugworm is a must, ideally cocktailed with squid or frozen peeler. My method is a two 3/0 hook pennell rig, with 4 to 6 lug encased in a squid cape. This also works with sandeel instead of lug but is barley second best by comparison.

Come on now......Dont you think them donegal fishermen would know about cod if there where any there, there might be an odd stray one, but then they would be afraid to mention it because 5000 people would be on that beach the next week....................................................................

Them Donegal fishermen

#15 Post by joemeenan »

I am wan o' them Donegal fishermen :D , and just because I give away the odd mark that's already known for producing a few decent fish, doesn't mean that I'm goin' to give away the results of twenty odd years searching as well. If you seen the state of my casting you would know I need all the advantage I can get. :?
