Report: After not catching my 1st Bass last night, decided to head north of Dublin to continue my search for the elusive bar of silver.

I hadnt heard of or read any recent reports from the Louth area, so this meant one of 3 things.......

1) Nobody bothers fishing up this way, cos they never catch :!:
2) People do fish/catch up this way but keep it very secretive :?:
3) Broadband hasnt reached Louth yet, so the locals cant post a catch report on SAI

Not to be undeterred, I set of around 7pm after collecting peeler and digging some rag/lug.

I arrived around 8pm, after a stop for some grub, with the tide almost full out, it gave me a good chance to walk the beach and check its features (I was fishing behind the pitch and putt), there were quite a few banks and gulleys, a couple well within reach from the HW mark. I made the rather long walk out to the water mark, and set up a pulley rig.

Reeled in 20 minutes later to retreat from the incoming tide, and yep, rig was full of weed. I had learnt a little from last nights fiasco, so packed the gear up, and made my way back down the beach. There was no point in going to the hassle of fishing until the weed had died down.

I set up the 2nd rod while I was waiting on the tide with a 2 hook flapper, (hoping to get a few flatties close in), and had time to contemplate if it was worth staying at all  I decided to stick it out, this Bass fishing is more addictive than crack cocaine :!:

By 9.30 the tide had come in sufficiently enough to tempt me back into the fishing, so put both rods out, the pulley into a gulley around 100 yards out, and the flapper into a gulley around 60 yards out.

Rebaited both rods 2 or 3 times without incident, or too much weed thank god.

The finally got a bite on the flapper, and reeled in to find a nice flounder on the end. He was around 30cm, but really fat. I've never seen a flattie so fat before :D , and never had I been so pleased to catch a fish.

Rebaited and cast out into the same spot, 10 mintues later another flounder, slightly smaller this time, but at least I had found some fish :)

Not much action then for the rest of the night, missed a few bites on the pulley rig, but dont think they were bass, but having never caught one, I guess I'll never know

As the tide started retreating, the weed problem came on again, so cold and very wet decided to call it a night.

I can tell you I was so thankful for the clean/dry change of clothes I had in the car

The Bass hunt continues.........

We can but try hey.....

I'd say the beach would offer some good fishing with a better surf, the surf at its peak was only around a foot or so last night and died down as it reached high tide, not much wind around either.

The gulleys running across the beach seemed to offer a good 3-4 foot drop in water level, sufficient I would say to hold some fish.

I'll try the beach again under more favourable conditions sometime for sure

Hi;
Louth has some good marks, both north and south of the wee county. In the south there's baltray, clogherhead, port and dunanny, in the north there's cooley and carlingford lough amongst others. Although like everywhere, the conditions usually have to be good to catch but if you persevere you should be successful!!
