bit of a tongue twister but will a f/s make any difference on a rod rung for multi?

I'd imagine the biggest issue will be distance! The rings tend to be smaller on a "multi rod" as the line flows in a more direct line through the rings from a multi. The rings on a f/s rod are larger to accommodate the larger loops coming off the f/s. The bigger the f/s, the more acute the angle will be between the spool and the 1st ring, thus more friction/drag, thus smaller casting distances... At least, that's how I see it. Haven't tried it mind you... :roll:

ask tom aka rockhopper,,, but as far as i know the spine might be reversed on the rod for casting but you best to ask tom as he the main man on the subject

The spine would be the same for multi or f/s....a blank has a soft side and a stiff side, i always place the stiff side on top, so thats the multi version, likewise I place the guides underneath on the soft side, thats the f/s version....the handle with a fish on is the same on both.

The problem with trying to get a duel purpose rod in my opinion is like what been mentioned already, the size of the guides....granted the size of a f/s reel-v-the stripper guide will play some part, but the stripper for the Low Rider guide is only a size 20 anyways....the distance from the reel face to the stripper is very important though. The other problem multi-v-f/s is that a rod that is parabolic isnt a problem for the f/s version, but the multi version would need more guides, to stop the line from touching the blank.

When it comes to needing distance duel purpose is never going to give you the best the blank can offer. I dont think its worth the effort....one or the other.

the easy answer is yes it would ,most fixed spool rods set up for casting have a 50 mil butt ring or bigger to allow the coils of line comeing from the fixed spool reel to flow freely from the fixed spool through the rod butt ring with the least amount of friction.the multiplier rod has a smaller butt ring 25/30 mil the line from the fixed spool reel would be choked trying to go through the smaller butt ring and there fore distance would suffer.if the set up is only being used for liesure fishing then it wont matter that much,so it all comes down to what you whant to use it for.cheers john

Anyone else remember the big fixed-spool rings from 25 odd years ago?
I transformed one of my Conoflex blanks to fixed-spool ,equipped with these monsters :just three intermediate rings plus the tip !Coupled with a Mitchel 398, it was quite an outfit !

Distance wasn't the objective with this material, it was more for the convenience, especially for night match-fishing.

On a fs reel the rings are larger (esp the first) and fewer as the line strips off in loops and may get tangled on the multi rods smaller rings which will result in a crack off, so in theory it is OK to use a multi reel on a fs rod but not the other way round........don't know in practice as I haven't tried it.

Sure do. My first beachcasting reel was a big mitchell (might have been the 398 - can't remember now :? ) - the one without the bail arm, just had a roller that you wrapped the line around after casting. Could haul in a swimmer, scuba diver, small trawler, whatever :lol:

i tried a fspool on my abu esprit 13 footer and was a bit put off at the noise the shock leader made as it went through the rings i recon a powerfull cast would cause a blockage and snap off at the least , :twisted:

Yes years ago the fixedspool rod was rung with a 50mm ring and three or four others above it depending on the rod this made the blank very top heavy with varying degree's of problems.
These rods were rung for fixedspool's with large diameter spools like the famous Mitchel 498 which gave off large coils of line hence the big stripper ring to smooth line flow.
Today we have better designed fixedspool's with much smaller spools and better line flow.
Myself i have been using a multi-rod for years with a fixedspool with no problems.

Have to say Paul has it spot on,done the same myself when night fishing switched to fixed spool on a multi rod never had a prob, no birdies or crackoffs
