[b]Report decided to hit the pier at lennan early to avoid the mackerel basher's, as soon as the rods hit the water we were getting bites, but could not hook into anything, down sized our hooks and still could not get a hookup, it was just one of those days :? after a few hours we riged up some mackerel feathers and bang we were on to the mack's, we were pulling them in four at a time, at the end up i was fed up catching them so i put my time into the bait rods. fished at distance, in close, and then tryed the float, nothing!! the place just went dead "apart from the mackerel" the son was hauling them in with every cast. then about 10.30 a car load of FN arrived, RESULTS----pure mayhem  they were swinging leads and feathers everywere, lost count of how many times they hooked up with my line, they were like weans in a sweet shop, and they kept every fish they got, everything they got went right into a black bag, it was madness. so with nothing happening with the bait rods we packed up and headed for home, and sat down to a platefull of mackerel fryed in garlic butter, jes: great stuff!!

Awe well, at least plenty of mackerel about and as long as that was all the FNs are taking they can't damage those stocks. Local up here was down fishing at Culoo rock recently and saw them cart of half a bin liner full of wrasse and pollack. I didn't even know you could eat wrasse.

Nice clear photo, I know what you mean about the FN's but it was just as bad before they arrived..........
I witnessed on several occasions guys filling fish boxes at Kilkeel pier with Mackies only to leave them there when they were finished fishing.
Then again what about the theory of Mackies dying once handled??
Case of early bird gets piece and quiet...

i agree with what your saying, i have also seen guys filling fish boxs with mackerel, pollock and coalies and at the end of the day they just dropped them over the side of the pier, or left them there to rot  a bloody waste. when i hit into mackerel i keep about a doz: few for the pan and the rest for bait, any after that i grab the hook and shake them off, for i believe the theory that handling the mackerel will kill them......had to hit the pier early to catch the tide, but mostly to get some peace to fish, for during the day it is packed up with the mackerel basher's, to many leads and hooks flying around for my likeing, nothing worse than a lead flying past your ear every minute or so :xmarshpike wrote:Nice clear photo, I know what you mean about the FN's but it was just as bad before they arrived..........
