is the word getting out?
not wanting to get into the wrongs or rights of the argument but is word of the bass laws actually getting out. while working in the shop today, a good few members of the public approached me asking for the number one bass lures, marks for bass, tactics for bass etc
how many people not in the angling circle actually know about these laws, when i told them about it, the look of shock on the faces was as if they didn't believe me,i then went on to say that there was a minimum size and bag limit, neither of which they knew about either, is the cfb doing enough to publicize these rules?

dont think its really getting out there at all i was fishing an open a few weeks ago and the bloke next to me caught a bass which was 29cm i stuck it back after measuring it while the bloke was getting his card marked by another angler the then came back over to me and asked for the bass i said what do you want the bass for and he said for his dinner he was shocked when i told him that it was under size
Wish list for 2015: sword tail, black Molly, horny cobbler

I think we could be doing with a few more signs about alright. I fully understand however that tackle shop owners may not wish to lose revenue by displaying posters, not saying I agree with that either but I can see where they would be coming from. Spotted a couple of lads whilst out and about on the boat spinning at known bass hot spots on Saturday. I would say, entirely due to ignorance of the law to be honest.

talking to my dad about the fishing around lahinch at the moment as i'm planning a trip over on the 20th , mentioned there were 3 lads fishing for bass off the promenade on friday night but hadn't caught anything but they happily told him about the 9lber they caught last week. There is a sign about the bass bye laws not 5 feet from where they were fishing.
Not ignorance of the law , just plain ignorance i think.

Tackle shop owners and their loss of revenue?
I think any tackle shop owner with half a business brain will realise that the long term protection of fish stocks (not only bass) equates to the long term viability of his tackle shop!
This is one angle I intend to approach campaigning for bass protection from.

John D.

The Shannon Regional Fishery Board have the coarse and pike bylaws translated into 8 languages and printed out for anyone to order.
See here: http://www.shannon-fishery-board.ie/gui ... _guide.htm
And the Central Fisheries Board have their multilanguage versions here:
http://www.cfb.ie/fishing_in_ireland/An ... ations.htm
I think it's a very good idea ... no excuses "me cannot understand" from now on. "OK that's no problem sir, which language do you want to see the rules in"
I'm sure that the RFBs would set up the bass regulations the same way if requested ....(I'm sending my email tomorrow)
Can some other readers send in a similar request to the local Regional Fishery Board?
Of course that leaves the local individuals who bag everything that comes out of the water ..... better print some copies out in English too !

I've written to the Executive Officer in the ERFB about getting some signs in that region. Will post back when I get a response.

One thought Eric.....you are doing a dis-service to a customer if you sell him a bass lure and he is unaware of the ban and then gets caught....he will tell the officer that he was sold a lure and nothing was said to him about the ban...kind of shifts liability to the shop.. I think if you tell people about the ban in a friendly and helpful manner there would be no problems ...probably result in repeat custom. The yo-yos that snigger see if you can find out where they are fishing and report it to the boards. :P

Central location for communication?
Hi Derek,
You said your better half is Polish.
I've often thought about trying to communicate directly to the Polish people living in Ireland about fish conservation issues etc.
Can you ask your better half if there is any sort of website that provides general information for Polish people living in Ireland. If there is I feel this would be at least one good way to try and educate Polish people about our fishing policies.
Many thanks,
John D.
