People: Billy no mates

Duration: 1.5hrs

Species: 1 Mullet

Weight: Who cares

Weather: Perfect (for a change)

Method: Float

Bait: Bread

Comments: Finally the weather took a turn for the better so I decided to head for my next target fish the illusive mullet, out of all the fish this can be the most frustrating and the most rewarding.

My campaign started yesterday evening, although I was late on the shore there were still enough Mullet about to throw in a bit of chum, lucky enough the mark is only 4 miles from my front door so I was able to take a run out before work and feed it up again.

Tide was in at 7.30pm so I got home from work and headed out at around 7.00, although I didn't really spot any fish taking bread there were some feeding off the surface. I spent a frustrating hour as pods of mullet swam past my float in a small back eddy but I wasn't expecting much on the first session.

The tide started heading back out and the fish moved with it, just as I was about to give up I noticed a small pod of feeding fish about 60 yds out so I waded out to them for one final chuck. To my surprise the float shot under but it resulted in a missed fish, with renewed confidence I quickly rebaited and threw the float past the feeding fish pulling it slowly back over them. with in seconds the float slid under I lifted the rod and was met with a heavy resistance which was followed by a screaming reel.

Its been a long time since I went Mullet fishing and I enjoyed every minute of the fight, I played the fish for about ten minutes battling against the receding tide and the current of the river, I had forgot the landing net so it was a struggle but I eventually landed her on a sand bank in about 2" of water, result!

I quickly got her onto the bank and was lucky enough to take a picture before the battery died, my lucky night, she was returned safely to swim another day.

The saying you only get out what you put in has never run more true than fishing for the illusive Mullet.
