South Down mullet,14-5-08
People:me
Duration:3hrs
Tide:low
Weather:bright,sunny.
Bait:bread
Rigs:float,size 6 hook
Results:mullet
Report:Finally the mullet are starting to show up again.I`ve been looking forward to this time of year since the end of last october :)
This was the first time this year i`ve tried for mullet down at this mark. There wasn`t alot of movement on the surface infact i only saw about 5 fish "finning" while i was there.I spotted about 20 nice mullet swimming in circles just under the surface, but they didn`t seem interested in feeding so i concentrated on the few fish that were making a splash.
It was very slow going.I only saw one mullet take free bread from the surface, but that was enough to get the blood flowing and make my hands shake when i was trying to bait up  I`d been fishing for just over 2 hrs when i saw my bread being sucked under the surface and my float shot of to the right.I struck into my first mullet of the year, which didn`t seem to know what was going on,and for the first few minutes didn`t put up much of a fight until it saw the net for the first time. Then it sped off to deeper water.Nearly 10 minutes or so later i landed a nice 4lb 5oz mullet, not bad for the first of the year :)
Im really looking forward to the next 5 months of mullet fishing.
(There must be something wrong with me cos mullet do your head in  )

cheers mate.
I needed a break from fishing  250 sessions a year was starting to take the piss :D so i decided to only go when i really felt like instead of just for the sake of it.I`ll prob be fishing mainly for mullet this year so dont expect too many great reports full of fish

Hi Davy, I have a location in south down that has hundreds of mullet showing already, I'm going to start feeding them up next week haven't really targeted them in about 15 years or so and I've turned green for what ever reason.
Interested that you got one first trip out, gives me the confidence I need.
What line you using??

Hi marshpike,i usually use 4lb or 6lb mono with a 6lb fluoro hook length.this year im using 4lb berkley crystal braid.it`ll be interesting how many more hook ups i get compared to last year when i had a 50% success rate, and the fight should be alot more fun too :D
alright colin,i did turn up for that mullet session,i was just a wee bit late and the weather was crap so i didn`t hang around  hopefully this year i`ll have a few more marks to try if the wind is blowing in a bad direction for the usual spots.i`ll be heading over to the lough this sat after work if the weathers good.fingers crossed :)

If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.
