West Cork - 18th May 2008

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me and Melissa

Duration: 3.00 - 6.30 pm

Tide: HW at 5.20 pm

Weather: Moderate Southeast wind, overcast

Bait: Lures, sandeel, crab, mackerel

Rigs: Size 1 two hook flapper

Results: 1 pollock

Report: I headed to a deep water rock mark that was great for pollock last summer with the intention of targetting pollock for the first time this year. It would also be the first time spinning this year.

The wind was stronger than I expected, with some large swells. Last year this mark only fished well in calm conditions. But it takes a bit of effort to get down there, long walk across fields and then a tricky climb down the cliffs. So after that amount of effort I though we should at least give it a go for a while

I tried frozen sandeel and various lures but nothing was biting. I also had a few crabs in case there were wrasse about. It looked a likely spot for wrasse. At about 4.15 pm with no sign of a fish I was ready to move on but decided to do a bit of bait fishing before packing up. I baited up a size 1 two hook flapper with mackerel and a slice of sandeel and cast as it out as far as I could. Then did a little more spinning with the other rod. A few minutes later there seem to be a twitch on the first rod tip. I struck and felt a good size fish on the end of the line.

It was putting up a good fight - as I got it close to the shore I could see that golden brown colour characteristic of pollock - and it looked to be a big one.

It was the biggest one I have caught so far - 54 cm and just under 4 lb.

Hoping that there were a few more about I stayed on until about 6.30 pm but there were no more bites.

Thanks guys,
Getting that pollock certainly made my day - although I only caught the one fish during that session it was a personal best for me so that more than made up for the lack of any more fish.
