If the reel is noisey when the line is paying out on the cast is off, but if its spins fast and quite and doesnt settle in the same spot twice its balanced correctly. Your questions:
(1) I cant think of the name of the knot off hand  but i put mine in the middle of the spool.
(2) Sakuma is a cheap and cheerful line for practice.
(3) After you have layed the balancing humps at the start of the spool (about 40-60ish yards) start laying it cotton style after that until just under the lip of the spool (2m) line lay plays a big part in eliminating crack-offs if its not layed on nice and neat its not going to come off in the same way.
Hope this helps.

Thats just the way i do mine, you can try either way,,, some people use one hump in the centre some use two outer humps, or cotton style from the start, but if you go this way often with brand new spools they are not always perfect to begin with so you just amplify the existing problem.
As long as you get the spool ballanced you can use any of these ways, it just personal choice.

Gearoid you're slowly being lured into the trap! :D It starts off with a few questions, next thing you'll be up all night spooling and re-spooling the reel, then the lure of old Abu's and Zippies on Ebay begins. Before you know it you'll be going through the casting motions in the kitchen with a sweeping brush!

You dont need to buy new gear, very good distances can be gotten from standard fishing gear, nearly every half decent rod can cast in excess on 200yds, and if you just keep your reels in good machanical order and running well you would be suprised what they can acheive. As keith mentioned you welcome anytime

Been there done that its much easier keeping it simple lol.
There is nothing worse than when I was reading sea angler about spool balance etc and one guy was saying the spool shoud be dead silent and mine kept on making a noise, Id say I did more damage to it from opening and closing it. Now I only tune them a few times a year and they work away grand.
They dont make em like they used to :(

I've put tg rockets in one of my greens....out of interest one day i ran it dry(no oil in the bearings) and i also removed all the mags, spun it up and flicked it into free spool..after 2 minutes i got bored and stopped the spool :D serious casting capabilities...dont cast it like that though!

Re: Me havin a few thumps
Your cast is looking better, fair play!!
Regarding spool grip: you can either use some inner tube (aprox-2inch) from a bike on your thumb or a lenght of rubber (5-6inch) clamped under the coasters/reel and stretch it around on top of the spool, here is a usfull link explaining: http://www.planetseafishing.com/tutoria ... the-strap/
Just one small thing i noticed from your pic,s/ Your left arm could do with being a little higher as you come round, this will aid your punch/pull at the end.
What sort of distances are you getting now??
