Moore Street fish Stalls

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I was down at Moore St the other morning and had a quick walk past the fish stalls that are at the bottom end. I saw on both stalls that they were selling Tope, Spurdog (or very similar) and what looked like fresh Bass (mainly under the size limit, but I know its illegal to sell Irish caught Bass anyway). It seemed really strange that they'd be selling these types of fish and I don'y know if it's legal or not. Also, who really eats Tope/Spurdog etc??? Are they serving the Chinese/Thai community? Thanks.

im sure all non nationals would eat spurs and tope. i meet a french lad las yr who said dog fish was a delicacy :D :D

dogfish is marketed as 'rock salmon ' :wink:

There is no problem with selling species of shark for consumption (I think), but if you are concerned that the bass you saw was Irish, wild and under-sized then you should report it to eastern regional fisheries board. Fisheries protection officers (with respect to the marketing of fish) are employed for a reason and if you suspect that fish being sold are illegal then you should report it. More than likely the people selling the fish will not be prosecuted but the stock will be confiscated if found to be illegal. It is important to be vigilant about these things and act accordingly.

Recently, I was in one of the many fish shops in howth recently and saw a large pike for sale. Given that it is illegal to kill such a fish in Ireland for personal consumption or otherwise, I had to enquire about it origins. It turns out that it was Swedish so there wasn't a problem. But, it always pays to look after your interests regardless if it is illegal selling of fish, netting, pollution etc.

There are people around Dublin eating Roach and Tench from the canal's so Tope would be a step up, Although having to pay for it would probably put them off..

most carp are being imported from poland, as the polish have it as tradition for dinner on 24th december, afaik its grass carp they eat

I was in italy 2 weeks ago and saw a tope of around 30 lbs on a fish counter in the local supermarket,and last year saw blue shark for sale in spain.I gut hooked atope last year the fish was in a bad way so i kept it ,it weighed about 25lbs there was some amount of meat on a fish that size. I ate half and gave half to the owner of the local chinese.It was a firm tasty meat not unlike swordfish the chinese lad did his in black bean sauce ,on reflection there are better eating fish to be had macks,cod,and most flatfish.changed hook type since nearly all hookups corner of the jaw , there too big a fish to keep and too good a sport fish to not try and protect

Thanks for the replies lads, it just seemed really weird. I have had 'Rock Salmon' before myself (in fairness I wouldn't choose it over some other things). It was the Spurs/Tope and what after some reflection could have been Smoothy that had me a bit concerned. Does anyone have the number or email to report the possible Irish Bass?

Most of the stall in Moore St, now buy their fish at the Dublin Fish Market in Blanchardstown. They buy early in the morning and then head out to the markets to sell what they have purchased. At the market, Gilt head sea bream and Bass (both farmed in the Med) can be purchased as well as many other fish.

I would guess this is where the Bass is from, but it would be worth while to ask.
