greystones, co wicklow, 17th may 08
People:me
Duration:8am-1pm
Tide:high approx 11.30am
Weather:cloudy, slight breeze
Bait:lug, squid
Rigs:flappers,clipped down rigs
Results:2 lsd, 1 flounder, 1 mackeral
Report:Arrived early and had the steps to myself. Got a bite straight away but the knot holding the hook gave way  . After a half an hour or so I reeled in a doggie who had completely wrapped himself round the line. I freed him, took a pic and returned him :) . Dont know why people look down on them, i like them :? . They give a decent bite and show up when others are not around. Think i'll adopt them as my favourites ,as Bruce Forsyth says  . Then i'll never be disappointed.. Later on I reeled in a nice flounder (didnt see the bite  ) and as it was getting nice and sunny I would have been happy enough to go home with 2 fish caught but I tried my luck at spinning. No joy with this so I put out a bait again with a 1 hook clipped down and got another doggie. I tried spinning again as I was watching another guy spinning across the bay and some seabirds dive bombing. I tried my Maria Viva lure and as soon as it hit the water i had a take. I thought i had snagged something as its rocky ground there but as it dived and swerved i realised it was a mack, first one of 08 for me  . It was a fine big one and I quickly cast out again in the hopes of catching some more but it was a solitary one. It kept me there an extra hour looking for more but who cares, another good session.
ps I dug the lug in Sandymount and as a first time digger (who's no stranger to manual work  ) I have to say those baitdiggers earn their few bob. Hard work indeed   , lost count of how many I split in two and couldnt use

well done on the mack, still have'nt shown on the co.down shores yet  i don't know why people grumble about doggies either. i think they are a noble kinda fish that we always enjoy catching. jordan loves releasing them in the water because they don't race off but just slide off slowly back into the water like they're not too bothered about just being caught :)

Dave, don't waste the lug that you split, keep them in a seperate container and when you get home gut them and freeze or salt them, known as wraps and they're a very successful bait, you can also let them get a bit sticky and smelly and they're a great flat fish bait.
Don't waste them in any case, just keep them seperate to whole worms and treat them as described, a great bait in their own right.

Thanks for the tip Eoinmag   ,,,,took me a while to work out how to dig them. I walked out about half a mile (you couldnt even see the sea  ) when I could have found them(and did  ) near where I was parked. I dug a trench that wouldnt have looked out of place in the First World War  ,,,,all for 2 or 3 worms( then had to fill it back in :( ). I eventually dug a circle around each worm cast and found a worm every time   . If i'd known you could use the broken ones,,,,,,,,,,DOH!!!!!!!!!!,,,, AW WELL,, NEXT TIME (when my back recovers    ).

Well done I found in sandymount for lug.. if you go off to the left as if going towards the chimneys you will see the holes together in the sand a pro. told me you need to start and dig back over them about the depth of the fork this makes a big hole.....My mate and i collected about 40 quick enough but it was hard digging...
