pulley pennels are not just for bass . it just happened bass took the bait which i had no control over and for the record we were not targeting bass , so with the way u guys are going on i should not fish when the bass ban is in effect, i dont think so do u!

Bass

Look basically thats what the ban means no BASS FISHING! its there for a reason, there are a few enough of these fish left please respect what has been put in place to protect them. Go fish for something else   wrasse or pollack or mullet the choices are endless, why fish a mark that is likely to produce bass it dosen't make any sense...

Some sea anglers are their own worst enemy. Perhaps we do need a closed season for sea angling and a license to fish similar to that enjoyed by our freshwater brethren. :?:

Off season Bass

#14 Post by Blanksy »

Lads,Come on!A little more broad minds are needed here. The irish close seaon is great and an example to everyone else,as is the size and bag limit. But,does anyone else think that the ban is a little bit linear?Has anybody told the Bass when to spawn?Mild or harsh winters for example!Someone said a caught fish may not spawn??????
What about all the bumper catches everyone has been reading about on this very forum,up to the "last day before the ban"!Are these fish going to spawn just because it was the 14th of May?
The lad keitzer said the fish were returned.Good enough. What about the fish that were slaughtered today and they didn't post to any forum!
Bass anglers have allways made good on the pre-spawning feeding frenzy, and if the ban doesn't cover that period also, then,a couple of unintentioned fish either side of the present ban is expected. What is the condition of the fish regarding spawning will never be known.

Buddy of mine just texted me. Spotted a boat angler catching a 5lb bass this morning. This is in an area that only produces bass, mullet, flounder & eel. Come on lads  , while there will be unintentional fish and the fish don't observe the calendar, we have to abide by the spirit of the regulations. We, above all others, have to show the good example or else we can't point the figure at the commercials who land bass "accidentally" as a by-catch of their targeted species.

Was it returned :?:

I tend too agree with most of the thoughts on this thread, for the future of our fishing you should avoid known BASS hotspots, the coastline is plenty large enough for all of us to fish marks unlikely to produce bass.

I've found it difficult enough trying to catch the elusive bass (in season) without ignorant anglers adding to the demise of the species (knowingly or otherwise) :!:

my initial point was this keitzer, its the bass closed season and so its illegal to fish for bass at this time. to that end if it was me i wouldnt put a report up in a time when its illegal to fish for bass , call it "wicklow bass mark" and report the catching of out of season bass on a public forum.

especially as your title, and tactics make it seem as though you had been targeting bass, which is against the law

your defensiveness also suggests to me that you knew you were doing wrong. not trying to get at you for this mate, but its the "bass fishing" closed season not just the bass killling closed season.

all valid points blanksy , but the law is the law and there is no provision in the closed season for annual fluctuations. its there to help protect a vunerable species and IMO we should stick to it.
