People:me and a few mates

Duration:7am to 7pm

Tide:

Weather:amazing

Bait:taz devils (blue and silver)

Rigs:

Results:me 8 shad and two bream des 2 shad dillon 3 shad 2 bream and a flounder

Report:took the day off work to see could i get a specimen!
started fishing at 7:30am only managed the one in the morning session. the lads set up the quiver tips for a bit of course action plenty of ground baiting brought endless bream, some nice dace and small silver eels.
the tide started to ebb at about 4pm so we left the course gear for the tazies. blue over silver was the preferred color by all the anglers.
the action was almost instant i had one after another with a lot of missed fish i think i had ten missed fish in total.
all the other lads had a good count of fish. there where 3 specimens in total sadly none for me next year maybe!!!
it was good to see a patrol by the cfb and with a bit of luck a bag and size limit will be in place for next years run of the elusive tarpon like twaite shad

Nice wee session , I cant wait for another go at the shad next year . good to see the cfb coming down for a nosey as well .
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

having never caught one of these a wee question or two comes to mind.

1. Can you eat these?
2. do you need a freshwater license to fish for them?
3. how long is the season for them?

dale

ps nice catch Brian
why does yer last cast always take an hour?

howye lads

ye im looking forward to next year too ill do the 2 days just to get my hands on the specimen i think i was 3 oz short

dale the shad wouldnt be renowned as an eating fish its very like a herring very bony but i dont know what they actually taste like to be honest each to there own i suppose.

at this present time there is no bye laws regarding twaite shad but the cfb are trying to put in motion a, sort of like the bass bye law 2 fish per day and a certain lenght bye law etc . these fish are probably the most endangered species in our waters yet there is no law on how many you can keep and if you want to claim a specimen you have to present the body this is going to change to either a photo and a scale specimen or a fin clip.
the shad run up the river to spawn, this happens only around may every year apparently they do not feed whilst in the river all the tazies are doing is aggravating the fish so they follow the lure and then hit it with a bang. i was told this by the chap from the cfb who has been doing some research on the shad for some time now.

best place for bream is to go up to the third parking spot on the small road use plenty of ground bait and lots of maggots.

most of the fish are caught on a dropping tide at either first light or dusk

thanks all

brian
