new Mayo byelaws covering Watercraft incl. Jet Skis

#1 Post by kieran »

Hi all

Just got an email from the CoCo around the draft legislation, key piece reads as follows...

3. PROHIBITION & RESTRICTION OF CRAFT

(a) Personal Watercraft (jet-skis) and Fast Power Craft are prohibited at all times in or on waters in the lakes specified in Schedule 1 of these Bye-laws.

(b) Personal Watercraft ( jet-skis) and Fast Power Craft are prohibited in or on waters in the functional area of the Council within 200 metres of the low water mark on the foreshore, except in an emergency or for the purpose of rescue or while obtaining access to or egress from the water.

(c) Operators of Personal Watercraft ( jet-skis) and Fast Power Craft in or on waters in the functional area of the Council shall observe a speed restriction of 5 knots from any launching site or the low water mark on the foreshore to 200 metres seawards, whether or not marked buoys are laid in the water to indicate such distance.

(d) Personal Watercraft (jet-skis) and Fast Power Craft shall only be driven or operated in or on surface waters in the functional area of the Council, at such reduced speeds and in such a manner as is necessary in the vicinity of other persons using the water, other watercraft or other property generally, so as

(1) to prevent nuisance or injury to other persons using the water,
(2) to prevent damage to watercraft or other property on the water
(3) to protect a natural heritage area or a monument or wreck protected under the National Monuments Acts.

A schedule to the Act also cover all the main inland waterways incl.

Lough Mask
Lough Carra
Lough Corrib (in the administrative area of Mayo Co Co)
Lough Nafooey (in the administrative area of Mayo Co Co)
Carrowmore Lake (Bangor Erris)
Beltra Lake
Bunaveela Lake
Lough Feeagh
Lough Furnace
Ballinlough
Clogher Lake
Lough Conn
Lough Cullin
Callow Lake (Upper)
Callow Lake (Lower)
Derryhick lake
Welshpool Lake
Carrowmore Lake (Manulla)
Lough Brohly
Bilberry Lake
Lough Lannagh
Attymass Lakes
Lough Muck
Keel Lake
Moy Estuary

Seem very comprehensive... if your local CoCo does not have a set of bye laws pertaining to marine safety, you could push this at them...

Hi Kieran,
So it was worth sending those emails after all!!

It will be interesting to see how this is policed, especially the little harbours around the coast [Roonagh for instance].

Will it slow down those lunatics on the ribs from the island?
I doubt it very much.
