Unfished Howth Mark

#1 Post by mark-ireland »

I was wondering if anyone has fished or has any info on the small beach to the left of the Martello tower on the way up to the hill as if you were heading to the main mackerel bashing spot that is flooded with people in the Summer.

That's roughly the view you'd have if you took the picture from the beach itself.

I've never seen anyone fish from this spot and was thinking about giving it a go with a 3 hook flapper rig using mack, rag and lug as bait. Wondering if anyone has had any joy from this area and know of what species to expect.

It's quite rocky and kelpy out from that beach mark. I'd say you have a chance at wrasse and Pollock with the odd chance at a bass as well, with the usual doggies in there for good measure as well.

small beach mark in Howth

#3 Post by kieran »

hi Mark

It is some years since I fished it but you get the odd flatfish on it and any chance of a bass is on the LHS around the rough ground. You will pick up coalfish and pollack along the rocks too, with rockling reported also. Watch for the rats mind.

Mostly the beach itself produces flats, doggies, the odd small wrasse near the rocks, strap congers and the odd silver eel and I am told a gurnard some time ago.

Better to fish the Cat Rock or other marks further out bar heading to mackerel bashing central. No reports recently, mind.

You talking about the beach at Balscadden? Down the steep steps?
I've fished it twice during the day and one fish. I was told that there is the odd bass there on the left to the rocks, not so sure myself.
I had one pin whiting and that was it, despite peeler and good baits.
Hook sizes probably were too big now that I think about it.

There's actually a lab that practically lives down there, nice dog but he did my nut in the last time.
He enjoys chasing stones though and if you throw a stone he'll bring it back for hours.

Jaysus

Someone else what WANTS to catch dogs... I thought I'd only meet one!

Dogs rely on scent more than visual stimulus, anything smelly like lug or mack around high water should do the trick. A fair distance out and yes it can be snaggy, try fishing around HW nearing or into darkness...

HTH

yep... smellyer the bait the better, wouldint bother with rag.. bit of mack or a lump of old squid/lug will get them for ya... caught doggies with denny sausages last summer so that says it all i think... i wouldint go buyin fresh peelers if your fishin for dogs put it that way, + you wont need to cast far as kieran was sayin if you fish at night..
