Joe, Is it important to have the hook point clear or will the fish biting force it clear?

Most of the time the bite will clear it,specially from the big mouth species such as bass and pollack.But theres a few occasion that a good size small mouth species like wrasse manage to hook them self on the big hook.Most wrasse i cough with softies usually fall for small plastic like 2 inch grub tail with a small hook.One interesting point using this kind of lure is u need the maximum sensitivity to feel them and the bottom(braid will help)....most of the take are too subtle....sometimes its hard to differentiate whether its a take from fish of the lure just got hung in the kelp.Last year i got a few juvenile pollack that nail an oversize plastic.....the fish not hooked to the lure,they just bite the tail of the bait and wont let go....the hook point actually is outside of lure body,but the position make it hard to get hung up in the kelp and snag.

Theres 2 style of rigging that i usually use...
1-Just let the hook point outside the body,maximize hook up rate,but at the same time still got hang up on the kelp and weed.
2-Just hide the point skin deep under the surface of lure body,more snagless and weedless...

A few pic from my experiment today...not mean to say that its reliable and 100 percent fool proof,but its works for the big mouth species...such as pollack....cheeerrss....

Used plastics for the first time tonight. Matt Spence of B.A.S.S. knidly gave me a few to try out. Wow! First cast and I had a bass of 54cm. The fish took the plastic almost right under my feet. I don't know whether the bass followed it in or was in the gulley in the first place but what a fight ensued as the bass sped off seaward to get out of the gulley. I'm a plastic convert :lol: .

if i'm usin shads i hook the jig head in and tie a piece of monofilament line with a size 8 or 10 trebble and hook in aroun the tail. there for if a a small fish is pluckin at the tail it may nail the trebble.

i have been using lures on high water marks with little succes, and am sure to try out weedless rigs in kelpy areas.
i have noticed while snorkeling that bass like these marks at low tide but my attemps of fishing the weedles gaps with metal lures or sp's were in vain.
weedless is something i'm hoping to give a better go this season,

I always soft plastics for the like of pollock and i favor the storm sandeel and the berkly fire tails. i find i get better results with these than spinners tho i've never tried plugs...but anyway i rig them up on a 2/0 sakuma manta extra and bring the hook outta the eel about 2 inches from the head of the eel with 2ft of 30lb line then a swivel, bead, then a 2oz drilled bullet, another bead and then a spot knot or another swivel...i generally let the eel bounce on the top of the kelp, mid water or along the sides of rock faces if i can get close to the edge...
