Records of commercial landings of mullet?

#1 Post by Tanglerat »

Has anyone got any ideas of were/how I can find out how much (both in weight and financial values) mullet (Tick-lipped, Thin-lipped and Golden-grey) was landed commercially in the Republic's waters for say, the last 5 years.

I don't imagine there's much of a commercial fishery for them, and getting them protection as a sport species like Bass would be good.

I feel a campaign coming on.......

Send pete a pm, if anyone can get that info he can now he's come over to the dark side...
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

Hopefully, the info is out there somewhere in the public domain already. I don't think we'd get very far using "insider" type info....

Any pointers, pete?

That's an excellent link, jd. Apart from being a bit outdated, it has exactly the info required.

In the year 01/01/2000-31/12/2000, 11.2 tonnes of Mullet were landed with a value of IR£21,025.

In the absence of more up to date info for recent years, it gives us a baseline to work from:
Each tonne of Mullet had a commercial value of IR£1,877.23.
1,000 kilos equated IR£1,877.23 or IR£1.88 per kilo.

That's what, just a bit over 2 Euro per kilo. A mullet weighing 1 kilo is surely worth a lot more than a couple of Euros.

But we'd need more recent year's figures. Anyone know a friendly TD who could ask a question in the Dail for us?
