Shannon Estuary, 24-march-2008

#1 Post by Donagh »

b]People[/b]:Me

Duration:12:40pm till 4pm

Tide:13:07 (0.8m) 19:20 (4.9m)

Weather:Cloudy with strong NW wind

Bait:Mackerel and squid

Rigs:running ledger on one rod 4/0 penel. Pulley, 2 hook golds, up and overs all 3/0 2/0.

Results: A 4lb ray. A whiting

Report: Had the ray after 1pm on ledger baited with mack/squid 50 yards out. The rod would of been pulled over but I got it well in time. I struck in but the fish got stuck in rocks close in so that I could touch the leader but couldn't pull it out. I left it slack for 5 minutes and when I struckinto it again getting the fish moving again and pulled out my first ray of the year.

I didn't see any other bites but lost a heavy weight coming in to that I thought was a fish but may of been weed as I brought in a few lumps after that some with rocks attached. The strong NW wind made casting difficult but I manged to the get a bit of distance. Crabs were veracious all the way through. If I'd down scaled my baits for more fish the baits just would't of lasted, even through I wrap with squid. The whiting came at the end and was mangled on a 4/0 variva big mouth which has the gape of a 5/0 hook. I was all out for ray anyhow. The conger don't seem to be biting yet which is unusual for this area.

Hi Skip,

I'm from east Limerick which has no sea fishing at all. All the Limerick sea fishing marks are in west Limerick. In a few weeks time it would worth while trying any of the Limerick marks.
