hi.i was wonderin if anyone knows what Feathers can u use to make Mackerel Feathers lures.can u use like chicken,pigeons.ducks ect.

as far as i know its chiken fethers but am not shure and clothes dye to collor them

Use the inside of foil crisp bags or shiny gift wrapping paper, some of the heavier ones are super, I wouldn't bother with the feathers.

You can buy chicken cape's or saddles that are used for fly tying. They come in loads of different colours. If you can get strung saddles they are much cheaper http://www.uksaltwaterflies.com/fly_tyi ... trials.htm
Ive got them from here nice feathers to use. You would want schlappen feathers. They are pretty easy to make get some stuff called crystal flash you could make loads of mackie feathers from one pack of each.

Tinsle left over from christmas decorations can be handy as well.

i heard of people using, ring pulls of cans and bits of beach balls cut up

the best stuff 2 use is capri sun drinks, cut into strips and put onto hooks by putin hooks through strips a few times, like you would a mack strip. seen a lad doin it and it work very well. :D :D :D

to be honest it doesnt matter what you put on a hook if your fishing for mackerel, i've used everything from a piece of wool to christmas tree decorations, tin foil to plastic and even a plain coloured hook(blue seems to work well, as does red :wink:

the best one i ever made up was a 2 inch piece of red wool with a few strands of silver tinsle (3-4) whipped on just under the eye, deadly for them, also good for pollock (tip: add a piece of yellow wool half the size of the red, deadly for seatrout :wink: )

Any tackle shop that sells fly tying gear will sell packets of dyed feathers in all sorts of different colours,veniards have a big range,and wont cost much,it wouldnt be worthwhile buying a cape for this purpose.

very cheap to buy. it would only break ur
heart makin up a few rigs when u can buy them
for 1euro

Thats very true. Dont take up fly tying thinking you will save money on buying flys, its an expensive hobby :? :D .

i was a nipper,,,, but thats me i only catch
them for bait or to sell them,,,,

also the fact that you can tie them as you want them, ive yet to see flies in shops that i would be happy with, alot of the time they look like they are tied to catch anglers rather than fish (no disrespect to commercial fly tyers)

To make them you would use similiar methods at making flies whipping the feathers onto the hook. They are a basic type of fly.

Mackerel are not the most discerning quarry I am sure I am not the only here to have landed a mack or two that have taken the lead weight. Still great fried, great smoked, great bait and great fishing with my 7yo lad.

goose feathers are very good use green thread to whip onto the hook u are on a winner for pollock.....i have also used yellow wool tied on with black thread...although if they are there and hungry they aren't very fussy.....

use what fly tiers use to impart movement to the tails of flies, that is marabou feathers. they are cheap and come in a wide range of colors
