I caught my first ever bass last year with a 110mm sammy:

Got another colour in the same size and two 85mm for this year. They cast well and I found them to be the easiest to walk-the-dog amongst 5 other models of pencil lure. They are great fun, specially when the fish hit the lure on the surface. Never get your eye off the lure when it's in the water and ENJOY!

Have had plenty of fish on the sammy in various sizes and colours, I think you will find that cortez fished one last year and had plenty of fish on it as well. My advice is fish the lure quite slowly, personally I don't like the really big sammy it's too heavy, i find the smaller sizes easier to manage and feel the action is better on them. Don't be afraid to stop the lure on the retrieve as this can induce a take. If bass has a go and misses then let it sit as chances are the fish is under the lure, give it a twitch and bang fish on! De barbing the hooks can be an idea if you plan on returning the fish, which in my ook is always a plan!
