has anyone here tryed makeing their weights with spoons? a small tea spoon makes a 2oz lead, a soup spoon - 4 1/2 to 5oz, and are very good for casting.....

Ah that brings back fond memories of melting lead in a teapot over the fire in my mothers house.
Then dropping the teapot on the carpet, spilling molten lead over the floor & burning a massive hole which I hid with a rug & got away with for about a month :lol:

I used to drop swivels directly into the spoon rather than the copper wire though.
I also had a metal eggcup I used to use for the same purpose.

Very handy & the spoon ones are not so inclined to get snagged & they plane through the water on the retrieve.

i tryed evry thing from bars to potatoes "DO NO TRY POTTATOES" once you buy a mold thogh you never go back and you can build up a colection over the years i mst have about 10 try a serch for do-it molds theyer top of the range in my opinion just there mainly amied at american fishing ther is a online shop in the uk with just about evry mold you can get these days but i cant rember the address

any scrap metal yard, but stay clear of lead pipe, some times they are filled with water. if you know anyone that dose the roofing, you could get the old flashing off them....

Perhaps its a good idea to tell him what happens when melting lead pipe that has water trapped inside.....it explodes the molten lead everywhere, it will have your eye or eyes out in a split second....it goes off like a bomb!

Melting point of lead is approx. 327.46 °C,

Sea anglers paying for lead - jaysus whatever next! :wink: shockin'...

Another good source of scrap lead (free) is your local tyre centre and garage - the balancing weights are lead afixed to small metal clasps.

The clasps are useful if you want to use a couple as a rotten bottom junk lead.

seen a fella in a pair of snowbee's running along a flat roof being chased by shades the other day. as a matter of interest,do the tyre men genuinely have a supply of lead going for nothing. does one just ask for refuse ballancing weights. how do they ordinarily dispose of em? would you get enough off em to make a handy blast of lead or would you be better off blaggin the local building site,I jest :?

I wouldn't use ballancing weights myself, especially without a professional dust / fume mask. Those leads tend to be very dirty and need to be cleaned (melted and poured into a container fo sorts) before the lead is used. With tyre leads this should be done in a VERY well ventilated area with a mask. There will be lots of fumes. The local building site is a good option. Just have a chat to the foreman and you should be ok.

must have had couple hundred pounds of the stuff stored up the mothers gaff, called up home recently to find it gone.
still though it aint that hard to source.

another handy mould ( disposable one ) in them pound shops you get 50 tealights, small round candle's for a pound, take them out and use the foil cups as a mould. they work out at app; 5oz...

Used to have a weight box 'bout 7/8 years ago with over 40 of those spoon weights lol Handy as anything and good for fishing beaches I reckon as well.

My first attempt weight making yesterday, Spoons as a mold and clothes hanger wire, In two hours I managed 2 useable ones about 3.5 g which suits me,I kept remaking them because they were coming out wonky,I used an old small pot but the problem was all the lead was cooling on the pour,but i didnt want to rush it! Anymore tips?, And I now have every plasterer,plumber and painter I know on the lead hunt for me!Think Ill use tea lights tomorrow,Anyway it was good craic and gave the lads a laugh when I answerd the door in my mask apron and gauntlets! Made about 20 rigs for myself during the week too,been scrounging my grannys button tin and using a few can ring pulls as attractors.,Always more satisfying when you catch with your own diy stuff.

clothes hanger wire is way to heavy for this job, better to use thick copper wire.
if the lead was cooling on the pour, then you did not have it hot enough.
also when useing tealight cups, you can fill them with quick drying cement,
use them for rotton bottoms.
