rock mark, Belmullet Mayo 10.3.2008

#1 Post by kieran »

People: Myself

Duration: 2 hours

Tide: approaching HW

Weather: not bad, cold wind from SW?, off squall

Bait: nil - lures only

Rigs: shads and spinners

Results: 2 small pollack, 1 decent coalie

Report: Went down to get some pictures of the massive swells roaring over the rocks but incredibly although the swells were very big, it was all relatively calm. Checked a few marks I know and found one to be quite fishable albeit from a platform well above where we usually fish - went back to the car and lugged a spinning rod and lure box down and had a nice pollack on the first cast with a shad (adding a spinner to them like you would for pike is deadly for pollack, almost never misses). Not bid but a great result, blanked the last time I tried this mark is similar conditions. A few casts later and a similar fish, around the 1 kilo mark, took the bait. Bugger got into the weed, let it go slack and he swam out, very decent of him! Nothing for twenty minutes so switched to a German sprat for the last ten minutes, light beginning to go early owing to the cloud and had a very decent hit from a coalie, lost it, and got hit again on the very next cast. It was a nice fish about 1.5 kilos, average for this mark in the winter. Am I imagining it or are all the fish this year in very good (fat) condition? Not caught a lot but have not taken a thin fish yet.

Good to be out.

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Nice one Kieran. Always nice to get a few fish on lures.
