Suggestions please

#1 Post by Seancelt »

I got an AA Surf as a present for Christmas and put a Penn coastal reel seat on it recently to use a FS reel. At the moment I am using a Penn Surfmaster 850 but I think it's too large for the rod so I'm looking for some suggestions for a FS reel to replace it with.
The rod is rated at 3 to 5ozs so I'm looking for a good, strong and reliable reel to pair with it.
Thanks lads,
Derek

why dont you try the penn 750 suftmaster, exact same as the 850 only smaller.

Best Fixed spools you can get IMO are Shimano, I wouldnt touch anything else.
They are expensive, but you get what you pay for . .if you cant got for a Shimano, then a smaller size Penn would be ok, but ideally i'd look for an 8000 size Shimano Biomaster.

Just my 2 cents...

Hi Keitzer30,
I was thinking of that but I was reading a thread a while back where a few people were saying that while the Surfmaster 850 was a good reel there were a few problems with the 750 and that it had reliability issues.

750 is a nightmare man, the line gets caught up under the gearing...a real nuisance...id look at the grauvell range and as rocker said shimano are very reliably...

i have a penn 850 and have not had any problems, and i have never heard of any with the 750. stay away from gruavelle have heard of them not being that good. but you couldnt go wrong with a shimano either.

Thanks Rocker,
How does the Biomaster 8000 compare in size to the Surfmaster 850?

In size, hmm . . . in line capacity the same, but the Biomaster is a much sleeker reel, its not as bulky looking.
The body of the reel and handle is a much neater affair than the Penn reel and my mate bought one from Gerry's of Morecambe and it came with 3 different spool sizes, 8000/7000/6000.

If you get a chance look online at Gerry's website and see the pictures of the the two reels.

I use multiplier, but I have had a Shimano Biomaster 8000 for ten years, my brother or my dad use it when they want to fish and I also used it before I changed to multiplier.

Thanks for the info lads, it's much appreciated.
I'll shop around locally and see if I can locate one. Then all I have to do is convince herself that "Yes, I really do need another reel". :D :D
