A wise man once said...."if you are having problems starting your engine
make sure the shop that overhauls your engine replaces the right SPARKPLUGS!!!!" otherwise you have many games of chicken with other boats(including Naval boats ), and rocks!!!.
We developed a competition on my boat....who can start the Aux engine the quickest!!!

Now hush1, that is a very good point. Few years back an outboard engineer of 'repute' serviced my engine and it then gave me frightening problems afterwards. Took me quite some time to sus' that this guy had replaced the plugs with the wrong variety. Did not bother with him agin.
Now stick with diesel and service myself.

suppose the best advice is to make sure that replacement plugs are identical in serial number to those that you are replacing.

Heres the gas thing Peter...the engina had just been serviced when I bought her.....I then had so many probs with the engine I had her serviced my self......thing is the plugs were prob wrong the 1st time and replaced incorrectly the 2nd!!

Ah!! Well, the 'I suppose' advice should be modified to - when repalcing the spark plugs, use the exact brand and serial number as detailed in the engine handbook.
I understand here, that 'wrong plug' problems arise from engine management electronic systems interferring with non supressed plugs.
Hush1 - you had a tough time there.

Time messing with engine when you should have been fishing. On the plus side, you know your engine alot better.

Oh very true Peter......I think the main prob was not having a handbook!!!!

God will I ever learn and yes I missed alot of fishing last year......

Ebay is great for handbooks, especially for the older engines. I've always bought a handbook for every second hand engine I've owned. Then I do my own services... You need to be mechanically minded though. At least this way I know the fecking plugs are right. Very frustrating mate, but hopefully your over the hump.
