Hey all,
Real noobie question but rarely use it as a bait so i'm asking...
Does anyone have a photo of what a properly presented mack strip looks like??
anytime I have used it, it just ended up bunched up on the hook like a heap of crap even when I used elastic
cheers
john

only hook it once through the hook near the top section of the strip otherwise it will bunch up like you said. i also trim away a lot of the flesh for better presentation.
you could use cotton, thread it on the shank of the hook and make a sausage either skin side up for sight predators like mackerel or flesh side up for scent/scavengers like dogs. hope it helps, next time im out il take a few pics to show you what i mean. 8)

i usually hook it once through the skin then pull the hook back through the flesh. recently i've only been using mackeral for whiting so the strips have been small and only needed to hook them once as Eric said above.
if you are using makeral fillets however and need to cast them use a pennel rig and secure the fillet with tread.

John, shave off most of meat and leave a slim even layer...Hook it throught the skin side at the top of the strip, pull the strip up over the eye of the hook, also leave a little jag of line from the knot at the hook eye, this will hold the strip in place, now twist the strip and put the hook back through the strip on the flesh side, so you should have a neat, twisted, really tantilising bait that the fish will be sure to want
