1st Feb Waterford Codling Hunt!
People:Myself, Carpets, Heath and Pat
Duration:7pm - 0230AM
Tide:High 1am ish
Weather: em COLD ! -3 Celcius
Bait: Fresh/Frozen Crab
Rigs:Pennel Pulley
Results:Pat 3 43cmx2 1 30 oddcm codling Myself: 2 codling 36 1/2cm/43cm Heath 1codling 45or47cm either or! few pin whiting, Carpets 1 silver eel and 1 Tampon!!!
Codling over 40cm were kept for the table.
Report:
Arrived just before low water, Pat's first 2 casts resulted in a codling each measuring 43cm Both had small flat fish and whiting in their mouths see pic. Next to produce was Heath on the rise with a fine codling in the mid 40cm range, Carpets produced a silver eel next along with a 10cm Tampon  . I pulled in a 36cm and 43cm codling near the top of the tide. Plenty of missed bites by everyone, I had a nice take was hauling the fish for about 30yards when he went to ground, using 25lb straight through and a 525mag couldnt hold him, end result line broke.. Cest La Vie.
Twas a cold affair, the water the crabs were in froze over!! Frost covered the whole parish including rods and reels.
Il be down again this weekend.

makes you wonder if the small flats and whiting were nibbling at your bait when all of a sudden wollop fish ,bait and your hook get engulfed by a hungry codling ???? oh to see what goes on under the surface  never tried the trick with a small hook tied to a larger one to catch a tiddler as live bait but it sounds like it might work on your mark :?:
