fishing near caherdaniel

hi im from west wales and me and a few mates want to come camping to s.west ireland in caherdaniel for a fishing holiday for a week. we are (quite) experienced rock and beach fishermen in west wales so fishing for decent fish from rock marks is what we like best.

what i want to know is are there any good fishing marks around caherdaniel, i have been looking at the google map things and it looks very good ground. any good rock marks for huss congers etc? with big pollack and wrasse aswell hopefully. also any good ray and bass marks. we will hopefully be coming in late july into august. we dont mind driving but would like marks close by. if you dont want to reveal marks on here for any reason then could you possibly p.m me as we would only fish them once. no litter aswell.

ive heard valentia is good for huss? also kells point is apparently good. what are the tides like there. round here 7.0m is a big tide but ive heard 4m is big there? how much lead do you need to hold bottom on the 4m+ tides? also is there a problem with weed there?

There is great fishing for pollack and wrasse along lambs head, I had one follow hooked mackerel, must have been 10lb+.....unfortunatly it didnt take it :(
There are conger there too.
Dogs head is more difficult to get to and not worth the effort.
You can catch bass from the 'boathouse' on lambs head, or derrynane beach but they are not too plentifull and Waterville is well known for bass fishing.
There are cracking pollack, to be had spinning or float fishing from culoo rocks on Valentia.
I got one of at least 8lb with the first cast of a 250g pirk.
I havent really tried bottom fishing there but would say you could catch anything.

You could always book Kevin Brain from Waterville he is a good guide down there [url]http://www.kbfishingireland.co.uk/[/url] good for bait supply as well, Kells is supposed to be a good mark as well, I've never fished further than back of Rossbeigh from the the shore :roll: so can't help a lot.

i cant wait to latch into some shlongfull pollack. is the ground very rough around there (lambs head)? also can you tell me about the tides, i see 4m is a big tide for there?? can you hold bottom with say a 6oz lead in that or would i have to go heavier? im not used to the tides there unfortunately, as a big tide around hre is 7m.

there has been a slight change of plan. we are now going to come 12th aug till 22nd aug, stay in caherdaniel for 5 nights then move to dingle for the rest. this way we will get to see more of ireland and hopefully more fish:) is the fishing the same as in july ??? cheers lads

I fished Ross Bay and Kells Bay about that time last year and the year before. Last year I had mackerel, pollack, dogfish, wrasse, garfish in a session off the rocks on the right hand side of Kells Bay and I was talking to a local who told me ray and bass are frequent visitors there too. A few days later I did a 14 hour session on Ross Bay starting on the far end of the beach and as the people left the beach I moved closer to the car-park, all told I had thornback ray, dogfish, plaice, flounder, whiting and a turbot. Should be at it's best then, as for tides I would have thought even on the biggest unless you are in a narrow channel/estuary area you will be fine, 150 gripper or a lot less in most cases, probably a good move trying Dingle as well, have a good one :!:

Ground at lambs head isnt too rough, but some kelp especially on ledges in close to shore. Current not that strong.
There is a powerfull tidal race with a sandy bottom at the boathouse.
Meant to say hogs head, not dogs head in previous post.

its weird not many people over with you lot seem to fish on the bottom on rock marks. nearly all rock fishing is done ledgering here. anyway, thanks for everything guys, im sure i will manage to come up with some more questions :twisted:

oh and btw if for some reason anyone decides to fish west wales then i will return the favour for you (but i cant see you wanting to come here by the sounds of the fishing there lol)

You should stop off at Inch strand on your way to Dingle. Its a good mark for bass on the incoming tide especially at night near the rocks to the right of the car park. Be careful with the currents do as this beach has powerful currents. Youll need grip weights here as its pretty hard to hold the bottom. When fishing Dingle you should consider buying Bob Moss's book its available in most decent tackle stores in Kerry. Its a very good guide to fishing the dingle peninsula.

ye we were thinking of fishing inch, what tactics do you use thee, ledger lug or lure fishing.

speaking of lure fishing, whats it like round there, will we get bass on plugs and stuff, also pollack on the jelly worms and spinners. any particular conditions for the bass n pollack? obviously dawn and dusk is best but what about tides etc. god have i asked some questions on here lol.

i fancy a bit of chug bugging for the bass from the shallow rocky beaches etc, cant wait to go now!!!

We have found Inch fishes best the last 2 or 3 before lw and an hour coming in, have tried lure fishing there but done better on bait, sandeel/ mack strip or lug should be good by then, 2 hook flapper as good as anything 2 to 4oz depending on surf, weed can be the biggest problem down there especially to the right near the rocks, can be worth a drive up if its weedy or it can pass through. It will be better for plugging around Dingle.

sandeel and macky good for bass? round here its lug rag or crab, better for us tho if macky is good easier and cheaper than crab! could we get rays and turbot on them baits aswell cheers

I haven't fished around there in years but I do know that the water coming out of the esturary on derrynane beach is alot warmer than the sea so it might become a hot spot. I remember seeing white trout in that river as well so there might be a chance of those too. over towards west cove there was alot of mullet and there is a small beach in a place called Reen. That might be good at night for dogs.
