40 foot and bug rock, sandycove, co dublin

#1 Post by eric »

People:myself,wayne riley and paul o'callaghan

Duration:1-6

Tide:last hours of the ebb and the first hour of the flood

Weather:bad to very nice, still cold

Bait:razor,maddies,lug,mussel,mackerel,sandeel and prawn

Rigs:1 hook paternosters, pennel clip downs and 3 hook flappers

Results:pouting, poor cod,coalies,flounder,codling,whiting,5 beard rockling and a crow, not steve but we presume they'd be related as they where similar looking

Report:one look out the window and i established killiney would be a wash out, so i decided to head for a couple of marks in sandycove that produces fish and that would give us a relatively comfortable place to fish. my self and wayne arrived early and caught nothing until paul popped down. then i landed a small 5 bearded rockling on three small lug tipped with rotten razor. next cast and got a few small taps which developed into a nice tug tug, it turnt out to be a nice coalie over the 35 mark. wayne eventually got the catch of the day, a crow. the fierce bite had me thinking it was a bass or something, but half way out to the sea dangled a crow,it took a minute or to to land and went back unharmed, it says hi steve :lol:i reeled in soon afterwards to land my first pouting of the year, i was chuffed to bits. before we left paul was desperate to land a flounder but he couldn't do it, so on my last cast i chucked out my flattie rig and got one. i suggested a move to sandycove for the cod.
got there and straight away my rod tip was rattling away. wayne drew first blood with a lovely little red codling about 30 yards out. and then i landed another new species for the year a poor cod. paul was still battling away to catch a fish but just couldn't do it god help him. he left shortly afterwards, although he did get an ice cream out of the day     i then got my first cod just over the 30mark. i decided, lets gets a conger, so i sent out a whole mackerel fillet near the lobster pots to see if there was one around, you also get ling here so i wasn't picky. rod stood silent for a while followed by a small tap and then violent knock, i striked it and had the fish on, managed to pull it out of the weed but i dove again while i was reeling it in and i couldn't stop it snagging the line in the weed, pulled for a brake but the rig body was knackered after the rock's antics. the hooks where kamasan b940s so hopefully theyl rust out and the strap will be be grand to swim off. soon afterwards wayned landed a nice whiting over the 35mark too. the swell was becoming ridicules and dangerous so we headed for home chuffed in the knowledge that we both beat paul o'callaghan

nice to get out.......... lost a conger on my last cast at the 40 foot. never fished either mark before so it was nice to get out for a session,

the highlight of the day had to be the sight of eric terrified to go near the crow that wayne tangled........ the phrase he used was "those things are deadly and covered in god knows what"

also eric, i wasnt desperate for a flounder... i was hoping for a wrasse or a rockling in near the rough stuff. anyway it was only AFTER i baited the area for you that you etched out a fish.

wel done lads on the decent results..... beat me fair and square..... no problems admitting that
