west cork rock mark 2nd feb 2008

People:me

Duration:0900-1400

Tide:hw@ 1300

Weather:heavy showers, freshening sw breeze, gusting quite strongly as i left

Bait:frozen mack and herring

Rigs:pulleys

Results:2 huss, 6-7lbs and 12lb 2oz (109cm), and 1 5lb strap

Report:

because of the incoming weather and the tide times it called for an early start (6.30 ) . also the fact that the roads were frozen meant there would probably be 30 mins added on to the journey.. arrived at 0900 and set up straight away but remained biteless until 11 o clock when i got hte smaller of the 2 on a mack and herring fillet cocktail. half an hour later i got a savage bite on the imax on a mack head and guts and herring fillet cocktail. when i struck it felt as if the fish had got its head into the kelp so i gave him a load of slack. when i tightened into him after 2 minutes rest he budged and with some vigerous pumping he came to the surface..a nice male of 109cm and 12lb 2oz. he was quite lean, most likely after the breeding season and i think if it was late summer/autumn he would have been around the 13.5/14lb mark.

a few casts later i got the small strap on a mack/herring fillet cocktail. decided to call it quits at 2 when some of the waves made it a bit dangerous to fish.

Great fishing given the weather

Those huss are much darker than their shannon counterparts

Jealous and housebound

cheers lads, nice to be getting a few quality fish this time of the year.

ya they are quite dark alright. they tend to take on the colouration of the ground they live over.i think alot of the shannon fish are over clean to mixed ground, these fish are in pretty rough grond thus tend to be darker. have one very rough mark where they live in thick kelp beds where thay are almost charcoal black..
