Early News From Ballybrannigan

#1 Post by JimC »

Good turn out of anglers in difficult conditions on Ballybrannigan. Sunny at times but horrible squals in a strenghting wind made for tough fishing. There were certainly some quality fish being caught though numbers of fish were not great:

Even manager a  when that 40cm flounder won the longest flatfish

The beach looked primed for bass but sadly only one was caught.
Did the illegal netting of bass there in December do the damage on the bass stocks, 159 bass is a lot of fish out of the area

good stuff, hard fishing, but fun despite my first competition blank. Makes a mockery of the 2.5 hours I spent digging lug with Pete

Probably not the best time to tell you, but De Wall (our proposed original venue) fished very well on Sunday. Myself and Marco got a good few cod out of it in a short space of time (see report). Still it was the right decision to fish Ballybrannigan given the numbers I think.

Aye, was a tough days fishing alright. I managed 3 flounder in the first hour or so and it died a complete death after that. Thought we were going to bag up, particularly after looking down the beach and seeing a few more early fish coming in. However, it wasn't meant to be. It took until around a half hour or so to go before I managed another flattie to finish with 4 for the day. All small fish it has to be said at 20,21,24 and 25cms and deservedly beaten on the day (well done Paul) by Pauls Bass and 2 flounder.

I had it easy enough at the top end of the beach having brought the jeep down so no walking, a nice base to fish from and somewhere to hop into when the weather got really tough, it would have been a serious struggle otherwise. The tide rip made life difficult for a lot, especially combined with the strong winds. A tough day, well done all who turned out in that and had a go regardless.

Headed to De Wall yesterday for a Rambler Comp with Crosshaven SAC and finished 2nd again with a mixed bag of Codling, Whiting, Dabs and coalies. Plenty of fish running but there were plenty of bodies around later on too that would have made life very awkward trying to peg a 25 man comp there so probably the correct decision.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D

Went back to Ballybrannigan again on Sunday to Fish the Cloyne Open sponsored by the Cork Angling Centre. On Sat we had the sea running right to left, Sunday it deceided to go the other way. With 8-10 foot waves breaking about 200 yards off shore the water in front of us was in a constant boil making the fishing almost impossable.

Of the 23 angler that fished only 2 anglers had fish. The comp was won by Richie Dalton, peg 2, with a 47cm bass and a 32cm flounder second was Johnny Mc Evoy, peg 15, with a bass of 33cm.
