People: me and petekd
Duration: 22:00-24:00
Tide: Dropping
Weather: Mild, overcast
Bait: Lug, mackerel, sandeel, razor
Rigs: 3 hook flappers, 2 hook clipdown (size 4s to 2/0s)
Results: 10 whiting to me, 18 to Pete  (all between 20 and 27cm)
Report: Headed to rock mark first, but relatively big swell, so we opted for an untried (by us anyway) beach near Kinsale (no idea what the name of it is). Good exercise walking to the rock mark at least.
Small beach, I took the left, Pete the right. Calm waters, sheltered from what breeze there was, pleasant conditions.
Anyway, first cast was a whiting for me. Pete's rods were quiet, so I decided to give him a bit of a spur on. So a mini comp was born. I was in the lead for the early part, getting a whiting a cast. Pete was galvanised into action and was following suit, but I kept ahead with that early whiting.
Think we ended up even at 8 all, when Pete started pulling in doubles and trebles and I started pulling in bits of seaweed.
I got two more singles in between a few blank casts, to finish 18 10 to Pete.
Most of my whiting came to sandeel and lug. Pete's were mainly to mackerel. When I switched to mackerel is when my catch rate went down . I actually got more whiting on my 2 hook 2/0 than my scratching rig, but then I was fishing it at distance.
Interestingly 3 of the whiting I caught had damaged tails...don't know if this is a sign of some predator after them, or a condition or something else.

For that, read slagging...... Bigger baits at distance were coming in untouched so, with a cheeky scotsman in my ear, whiting bashing it was.... Mindless fishing but fun nonetheless and it was certainly a sight more comfortable than the rock would ever have been.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial
