Hooks for flies

#1 Post by dave armstrong »

What are the best all round hooks for saltwater flies lads, if such a hook exists.... Have been using silver kamazan 1/0 and 2/0 bait hooks and some of those hiro ones you see on the boards in the tackle shops. Not convinced they are great for the job though. Ready availability is also a factor here. Also what hooks anyone tieing pike flies on?

Ive been using Partridge Sea Prince Saltwater Fly hooks in various sizes ive been tying most of my flys on size ones recently. Gamakatsu SC15 hooks as well in some smaller sizes these are really sharp. Ive tied clouser and decievers on them and could probably use them for shrimp patterns as well. There is also Mustad 34007 which is also a very popular saltwater fly hook. Not too sure about the pike hooks Ive used some bigger hooks in size 2/0 but not sure about any makes. Hope that helps.

i like to use Tiemco TMC811S for the majority of my flies but am happy to use Mustad C70S D which are a hevier chank for more water resistant flies such as decievers and hollow fleyes.

for pike Ad Swier designed a hook for Prtridge which is meant to be excellent, this is the up dated version CS45 BN-A, although aberdeens should do fine in the 4/0-6/0 size(again dependent on the size of fly being tied)
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

Dave I actually tie quite a few pike flies - I use either Patridge "ad-swier" in size 4/0 or more recently gamakatsu stingers in 1/0 or 2/0. I get the Gamakatsu's from here along with most of my fly-tying stuff.

For s/w shrimp flies I used to use partridge something-or-other-shrimp hooks but more recently I have converted to std. kamasan B170's (yes they rust but so what!!!). For more general sw flies I use Mustad 340007's.
