Dunmore East 11/01/08 - help! No clue what I caught!!!

#1 Post by Baitlooser »

People:me

Duration: 4.00am - 5.30am

Tide: absolute low tide

Weather: very cold, rain, very windy

Bait: squid tipped with makerel

Rigs: 1 up 1 down

Results:
1 fish and I absolutely don't know what it is
Catch & release

Report: Very windy and rainy afternoon. First cast didn't bring anything. After good an hour I caught a fish which was about 10cm long, grey colour on top, light green at the bottom. Very big mouth compared to the size of the fish itself. Razorsharp teeth. And a lot of spikes on his back.

Could somebody please tell me what kind of fish I caught???

Thank you
Baitlooser

best advice for catching species is girls dont like fishing and its hard to catch fish when you sell all your gear'

Was thinking the same but i'm sure he would have found out the hard way with those spines  ...my money is on a wrasse from the area he was fishing.

thats a big long spined sea scorpion ,bullhead or millers thumb are different species http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/fish/Cottus_gobio/ . this is also a picture of the long spined version ,their colour varies according to local habitat .
as far as i know a father lasher is another name for the short spined sea scorpion .

If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

There seems to be two types of bullhead, a freshwater bullhead is called Cottus gobio and the saltwater version are called Taurulus bubalis. Bullhead and Millers thumb are the names we call them here in Kerry.
