People:me

Duration: 1.00am - 4.00am

Tide: incoming tide (high at 3.30am)

Weather: very cold - almost no wind

Bait: black lug tipped with squid/makerel

Rigs: flapper

Results:
4 whiting, best whiting about 35 cm, conger eel

Report: All whitings came on black lug tipped with squid, conger came on a mix of black lug, squid and makerel.

nice to get a conger in without big hooks and 100lb mono any pics baitlooser? come on boy get out that camera next time :D do you work shifts or could you just not sleep :shock:

Hi Roger,

Got him on a 50lb line with 2/0 flapper rig.
You're right I am working shifts - long nights, early mornings.
As soon as I will be home from today's work I will put a picture inside. My wife made one as soon as I went home - so I have the evidence :D

seem to be plenty of whiten around the estury at the min.were you out on the end of the breakwater or at ice plant?conger anysize?

I was fishing from the highest point of the rocks next to the harbour. Quite a hard fight with an even small fish to get it out due to the height of the point.
Conger was 75cm - I know just a small one but a big success for me.

Are you sure its a Conger? Might just be a Reaaallllll Ugly Silver..

come on guys ,a conger in the waterford estuary,, a common snot box,snotty,silver eel,slimer,knot cruncher , i would say this site has not changed a great deal since i was last here ,,let me appologise to any one offended but boycie its a silver eel not a conger

welcome back mr hill , :lol: but i think i know a conger when i see one , if you look closely you will see that this eels jaw line is quite long !! where as a silver eels mouth (jaw) is tiny and i myself have taken many a conger in etuary's !!! but cheers for your opinion G ! :wink:

never mind them...

to be honest though, in my opinion it looks like a freshwater eel, just going by the shape and the size of its head and shape and size of the pectoral fins..
have caught enough conger and silver eels to know the difference too :wink:

hi baitlooser ! i dont mean to be giving out !! if i have offended you in any way im sorry !! it is good to see your interested in conger ! most people would not touch them if paid !! if your delighted with that eel i cant wait to you when you get a monster !!keep up the good work and the conger fishing !! you never know you might get hooked on them full time like i did !! :wink: :wink:

looks like a silver/freshwater/common eel to me.

have a look where the dorsal fin starts :wink:

nice fresh water eel there baitlooser :wink:

enjoy meant to be quite nice and a bit oily.
after you eat it you can let us know if it was oily or not :lol: .

don't knock your self about competing against people we all have to start somewhere congers are not that difficult to catch :wink:

I am really delighted that there is so much response! I really learn something here! At the moment I try to find out what kind of eel it really is (I stick still to conger) - I will let you know what I found out!

To boycie : I never felt offended! Really! I am about to learn how to fish and I need all advise I can get. That's why I joined the forum! And when I will catch the monster I will make a photo and release!!!

IMHO (and I've caught enough :) ) its a Freshwater Eel.....nice one too :)

Conger has a much wider head between the eyes and a slightly square end nose.

I went to a fish shop yesterday morning to clarify what kind of eel I cought. Both of the guys said it is a...............conger eel.........

Thank you for all the effort everyone put in it. Next time I will have my camera with me at the mark and will make a nice and better picture before I release!!!

My son is a Chef and he is a mad keen angler too, he has told me many times that he is amazed at what his sea food suppliers DON'T know about the species they sell.....so I don't think you can put that in the bank, maybe you should have taken the eel to your local tackle shop, I would trust their judgment better.

agree with you tom, the seafood merchants often dont know what they are selling

last summer i was on moore street and notice to my disgust that one of the fish sellers were selling a tope of about 35 lbs and a smoothie of about 10 or 11 lbs :evil: :evil: :evil: when i asked her how much the tope was out of curiosity, i was asked which one as she had 2. when i pointed out that one was a tope and the other a smoothhound she shrugged and said that neither her nor any of the other fish merchants nor the wholesalers knew what they were.

by the way the tope as €25 and the smoothie was a tenner :shock:
