Continued my run of coming (I think) 6 or 7th (last four comps I've fished) with 5 counters - 3 whiting (30cm biggest), dab(24cm), doggie (38cm - never caught one so small!) and a couple of undersized whiting and a 5 bearded rockling of 11.5cm - but hey I was delighted - it was another new species for me, despite the riducule it caused me on the way back from the rest of the Cork contigent.
Anyway, lessons learned on how to fish the beach and what the secret bait I should have been using was (although the lug/mack combination seemed to do the job after dark).......if only we'd known before we started
Did the fishing pick up a bit after dark? I know Don beside me had a couple after the sun dropped, just wondering if others had the same experience?
“........if people from Leinster support Munster, it’s actually good as it has separated those who really want to support us from the fickle ones, which means the base is being built on a solid core of support. If it’s based on fly-by supporters, that’s not a good foundation – as they say, rats will always jump first from a sinking ship.” Denis Hickie, Disco Legend
For some of us it picked up after dark, but from what I heard it was no better or was actually worse for some of the others...Not sure if there was a pattern to position on the beach with respect to this (the lhs generally fished better than the rhs, but not sure if light level caused any difference in that).
I know myself and petekd (pegs 15 and 16) had a busy last couple of hours in the dark, with only a fish each in daylight. Doggies certainly only appeared after dark.
4 counters 3 whiting and a rockling couldnt catch an undersize to save me life
had 1 fish in first 2 hrs then another 2 hrs later and had a double on my last cast and to round off a perfect day gears/clutch went on my new reel
roll on cork things cant get any worse

Yeah Lee I was a couple of pegs further down at 20 and sruggled big time. Had to leave early so I'm using that as my excuse!! Learning all the time as you say, roll on the next one.

2009 would like to hit 20 this year
there's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
I was in charge of the logistics for the Cork Contingent and 4 of us made our merry way east that morning with all manner of things strapped to the roof. (well behaved bunch I might add, there was no johnny fartpants amongst them...) Had a very slow start, didn't pick up my first fish until at least 2 hours were gone and then managed a flounder at distance. Somewhat disheartening when Marco and Alby were hauling in fish to beat the band. Had a wander down the beach with about 2 hours to go and a quick chat to the Alby fella and discovered a nice dab hanging off the rig on my return, again at distance....The Comeback was on.... :D
After that, I got my finger out of my arse and pulled in another 11 fish in the last 90 minutes or so, Dogs, Dabs and Whiting. It was fairly frantic stuff to say the least. That manic hour and a half brought me from nowhere up to fourth place so pleased enough with that after the bad start although I was bollixed walking off the beach. I had 7 counters and 6 undersize altogether, Crab kept the pin whiting at bay in the last hour (after 6 undersize in a row) and accounted for the doggies.
Congrats to Alby, Dennis and Keith on their respective performances, well done lads. Lee did a stirling job as a pacemaker too, keeping the pressure on well beside me although that rockling at 11cms has to be the smallest fish I have ever seen caught on a size 2. The beach fished well for the much maligned east coast and it was a pleasant surprise the numbers of fish caught.
Great to see such a turnout, with scenes more reminiscent of an Open competition rather than a club comp. Spending the first couple of hours wasting time trying in close cost dear but it will be borne in mind for the next visit.... :D Well done to all who participated in their first comp, especially Keith with a great result in 2nd place. Thanks to Henrys tackle also for his continued support.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial
Yeah had a good day lads! Only had 5 fish with 3 counters nothing in close for me at all, all fish were caught between 50 & 90 yards for me! Cheers to Roger de dodger for the tapered shock leader after i discoverd that the line i had just put on was complete sh*t..oh yeah and the sandwich! Cheese and branson pickle will be on the menu for a while now
Fish caught were Whiting 22cm & 19cm, Doggie of 50cm, Flounder 26cm and Codling of eh...12cm   Also dropped 2 fish in the surf..one of which seemed to be a decent size too
Looking forward to Cork!

obviously neatness isnt the key to success, its chuckin your bait together lets the juices mix and put whatevers handiest on the hook, a little smoke also does the trick nicely
