Duration: 18.00 - 23.00

Tide: ? Big!

Weather: Wet windy and cold

Bait: Lug, wraps, razor, sandeel, crab

Rigs: Clipped downs and Flappers

Results: 3 whiting and 3 Codling

Report:

Headed away to try and get a couple of codling before the year is out and try out the new camera. Managed three of them up to 3lb or so. A few whiting knocking around also but very quiet overall. All fish came in the last hour. Saw a dead trigger fish washed up too which is the first Ive seen on the east coast.

Fair play to yas lads :) nice session! Did someone else say they saw a dead trigger on a wicklow beach recently? or am i goin mad :?

nice session sean , good to see a few decent codling around . Its interesting you finding the trigger fish on the beach ,I found one on thursday as well whilst fishing the north coast ,it looked a in similar condition to the one you photoed ,theres maybe more knocking around in the irish sea than people think .

Yeah Ronald, it would be nice (in some ways) to think we might be able to target them soon. Once they dont out compete the doggies :D

ive heard of a few being taken of wicklow pier as well as bream :shock: :shock:

Yeah eric heard of black bream off arklow pier a few years back, never tried it though.

thats the third trigger reported washed up on this site in the last week or so. 1 up N 1 out W and 1 on the east.
all were waiting for is 1 down south :shock:.

WE also had black bream on the boat two years ago out off cahore.

wish my boy will take his old father (me) down to killiney beach to plug for blue marlin at some stage.... :D :D :D

what is it with triggers that they seem predisposed to being washed up dead?

far more than other species it seems?

I don't think we have a resident population here, and they can't survive once the temperature drops below 12 degrees C or so.

Here are current temperatures from the buoys

M2 is in the Irish sea.

i figured that it would be something to do with temp alright - something must be changing for them to be hanging round a little longer than they should :shock:

are hanging around longer, or have they always been there?, we are just gradually gaining an understanding of their migration and habits

Nice fish.

Are Triggerfish common in Ireland? When I was there, back in June fishing in Dingle harbor, I saw a Triggerfish swimming around, close to the rocks.

We have them here in Southern California all over the place. Great fighters on light tackle.

They are becoming more common around the southwest of the country but probably only a matter of time until they spread to other parts.

Hi Lads,
A few years ago i caught a trigger fish from Ballymoney on frozen crab.
Was very unexpected as you say they are not too common but a nice surprise.

Nice codling Seanie :wink: A big year for triggers this year, seemed to be all up the west coast right up into early November. Came across another dead one on Streedagh on Sligo over christmas. Clever feckers but the drop in temps as John D pointed out crocks them or sends any others fleeing south again
